This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of “antiquity” and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in the period of 1400–1700. Der Band beschaftigt sich mit Untersuchungen zum staatlichen Selbstverstandnis des pharaonischen Konigtums, seiner Grundlagen und deren Auswirkungen auf das Verhaltnis Agyptens zu den vorderasiatischen Nachbarstaaten. Ein wichtiger Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf dem Konigshof in der Residenz als dem Ort, an dem innen- und aussenpolitische Entscheidungen vorbereitet und gefallt wurden und der personell durch Staatsspitze und Hofgesellschaft gebildet wurde. Das Werk vereinigt Abhandlungen, die aus einem internationalen Kolloquium zum Thema Der agyptische Hof des Neuen Reiches hervorgegangen sind. Die reprasentierte junge agyptologische Arbeitsrichtung der "Residenzenforschung" (parallel zu der im Rahmen der Geschichtswissenschaft gepflegten Residenzenforschung) widmete sich grundsatzlichen Strukturfragen des Hofes, der Hofgesellschaft und der Hofkultur sowie der agyptischen Diplomatie und der Rolle der pharaonischen Statthalter in Vorderasien und der von ihnen beaufsichtigten Vasallen. Die Regierung des agyptischen Weltreiches der zweiten Halfte des 2. Jahrtausends zog durch seine internationalen Kontakte zahlreiche Auslander an den Konigshof, ein Aspekt, der die agyptologischen Abhandlungen abrundet. Dank der interdisziplinaren Ausrichtung des Kolloquiums kamen auch zwei Nachbardisziplinen zu Wort, die sich mit der Residenz des Augustus und dem israelitischen Hofstil beschaftigten und somit "aussere" Gedanken zu den auch fur den Pharaonenhof wichtigen Aspekten der Wirkung der Residenz nach aussen und der Hofkultur beitragen konnten.
