This volume discusses the evolutionary paths linking planets and their atmospheres to their origin within circumstellar disks. It reviews the main phases of this evolution, summarizes what we understand and what are the important open questions, and suggests ways towards solutions. Dust accretion within disks generates planet cores, while gas accretion on these cores leads to the diversity of their fluid envelopes. The formation of planetary proto-atmospheres and oceans is an essential product of planet formation. A fraction of the planets retain their primary proto-atmosphere, while others lose it and may form a “secondary” atmosphere. When the disk finally dissipates, it leaves us with the combination of a planetary system and a debris disk. Using the next generation of observing facilities, we will be able to reconstruct more accurately the evolutionary paths linking stellar genesis to the possible emergence of habitable worlds. This is a study based on observation rather than mathematical theory in which an attempt is made to discover facts and relationships that give evidence about the course of solar evolution. The author's principle conclusions are that the earth and other territorial planets were formed at much lower temperatures than has generally been supposed; and that a more uniform distribution of iron throughout the silicate phases of the Earth existed in the past than exist now while the iron core of the Earth has been formed at least partly during geological time. For convenience of discussion the author divides the course of planetary evolution into five stages: stage 1 is assumed to start with an interstellar dust cloud, such as the globes of Bok and Reill; stage 2 he calls the preprotoplanet and protoplanet phase, when temperatures had risen to their present levels; stage 3 is the "high temperature stage", and stage 4 is the second low temperature stage; in his final stage the author outlines possible origins for the atmospheres of the earth, Venus and Mars. It may at first surprise that a physical chemist should write a book on the origin and development of the planets. But as the physical problems are many and involved and as the evidence in regard to them is very detailed, the physical chemist can obviously make valuable contributions to this subject. Mr Urey has discussed his views with astronomers, physicists, geophysicists and many other experts and frequently made use of their critical appreciation.

One of the most fundamental discoveries of the solar system was the detection of four moons in orbit around Jupiter by Galileo Galilei in 1610. The discovery was significant not only in the context of Jupiter; it gave credence to and was instrumental in firmly establishing the heliocentric system of Nicolaus Copernicus. Almost four centuries after Galileo's discovery, exten sive observations by the two Voyager spacecrafts have once again revolu tionized our thinking about the major planets, their composition, structure, origin, and evolution. This book is an attempt at summarizing our present understanding of the atmospheres and ionospheres in the outer solar system, with particular emphasis on the relevant physics and chemistry. I was motivat ed to prepare this manuscript for the following reasons. First, after under going rapid expansion in the recent past, the subject has finally attained suf ficient maturity to warrant a monograph of its own. Second, I have felt that as a result of recent observations, new and challenging problems have arisen whose resolution requires unconventional analysis and theoretical interpreta tion of existing data, as well as the collection of new kinds of data. I believe the time is ripe to put these issues in the appropriate scientific perspective, with the hope of stimulating novel theoretical, observational, and laboratory studies. I have highlighted the significant scientific problems throughout the book, especially at the end of each chapter.
