In many countries, censorship, blocking of internet access and internet content for political purposes are still part of everyday life. Will filtering, blocking, and hacking replace scissors and black ink? This book argues that only a broader understanding of censorship can effectively protect freedom of expression. For centuries, church and state controlled the content available to the public through political, moral and religious censorship. As technology evolved, the legal and political tools were refined, but the classic censorship system continued until the end of the 20th century. However, the myth of total freedom of communication and a law-free space that had been expected with the advent of the internet was soon challenged. The new rulers of the digital world, tech companies, emerged and gained enormous power over free speech and content management. All this happened alongside cautious regulation attempts on the part of various states, either by granting platforms near-total immunity (US) or by setting up new rules that were not fully developed (EU). China has established the Great Firewall and the Golden Shield as a third way. In the book, particular attention is paid to developments since the 2010s, when Internet-related problems began to multiply. The state’s solutions have mostly pointed in one direction: towards greater control of platforms and the content they host. Similarities can be found in the US debates, the Chinese and Russian positions on internet sovereignty, and the new European digital regulations (DSA-DMA). The book addresses them all. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand the complexities of social media’s content regulation and moderation practices. It makes a valuable contribution to the field of freedom of expression and the internet, showing that, with different kinds of censorship, this essentially free form of communication has come – almost by default – under legal regulation and the original freedom may have been lost in too many countries in recent years.

Școala clasică, de care România s-a bucurat din 1864 până prin 1995, era un loc unde elevii își cultivau inteligența și discernământul intelectual și moral prin contactul cu tot ce era mai bun din tradiția intelectuală a națiunii și a umanității. Școala corectă politic tinde să fie un loc unde sunt educați și părinții, alături de elevi, în sensul tendințelor progresiste, bazate pe lepădarea de orice patrimoniu clasic și de orice repere stabile. E un loc de unde, sub pretextul educării elevilor, se iradiază ideologie radicală și în familie. Ba, după cum se vede, școala este un loc unde nu elevii, ci profesorii trebuie să învețe mereu, să se lase reeducați. Scopul școlii de tip nou, activ, experimental și progresist, este acela de a educa profesorii: continuu. E înscrierea întregii societăți în fluxul unei îndoctrinări fără sfârșit. (…) Nu înțeleg de ce acești reformatori nu acceptă ideea de a lăsa sistemul de învățământ clasic în pace, de a-l consolida și de a face un alt coridor educațional (cât de digitalizat vor ei), un fel de școli profesionale pentru corporații. De ce e nevoie să distrugă întreg sistemul de învățământ? De ce această uniformizare? De ce strategia MEC prevede „cursuri de formare pentru părinți” și de ce „ținta este ca, până în 2027, 90% din populația țării să fie alfabetizată digital”? Cum poate MEC să se asigure că 90% din români vor fi alfabetizați digital? Folosind digitalizarea școlii ca pe o pârghie a unui uriaș mecanism de inginerie socială? Acesta a ajuns rolul școlii? A ajuns MEC un soi de Minister al Propagandei și Uniformizării? Pe vremea când elevii purtau uniforme școala era mai umană decât astăzi, când, sub pavăza ideologiei diversității de toate felurile, părinții și copiii sunt supuși la cele mai despotice și umilitoare forme de manipulare și îndobitocire. This book—the culmination of forty years of friendship between J. Hillis Miller and Jacques Derrida, during which Miller also closely followed all Derrida’s writings and seminars—is “for Derrida” in two senses. It is “for him,” dedicated to his memory. The chapters also speak, in acts of reading, as advocates for Derrida’s work. They focus especially on Derrida’s late work, including passages from the last, as yet unpublished, seminars. The chapters are “partial to Derrida,” on his side, taking his part, gratefully submitting themselves to the demand made by Derrida’s writings to be read—slowly, carefully, faithfully, with close attention to semantic detail. The chapters do not progress forward to tell a sequential story. They are, rather, a series of perspectives on the heterogeneity of Derrida’s work, or forays into that heterogeneity. The chief goal has been, to borrow a phrase from Wallace Stevens, “plainly to propound” what Derrida says. The book aims, above all, to render Derrida’s writings justice. It should be remembered, however, that, according to Derrida himself, every rendering of justice is also a transformative interpretation. A book like this one is not a substitute for reading Derrida for oneself. It is to be hoped that it will encourage readers to do just that.
