While 50 year-old Jack Phillips, a jazz trumpet player, is driving to his gig at the Famous Door in New Orleans, fantasizing about his favorite scenario, If I had known then what I know now, he has an accident, and wakes up in the hospital, 23 years in the past; January, 1968. He remembers what happened 1968, one of the most turbulent years in modern American history. It was a terrible year; the Korean capture of the Pueblo, the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the Klan killings, civil rights and anti-war riots in the streets, the Chicago riots at the Democratic convention. What should he do? Could he actually change history for the better? Should he even try? What about the unintended consequences of his actions? How could he find someone in the government high enough to have access to the President? Jack writes two of his predictions to his U.S. Senator, John Stennis. When Jacks second prediction comes true, Senator Stennis begins to believe his story, and relays his information to the Attorney General, because he doesnt trust J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover, livid that a senator has information before the FBI does, assigns two of his sociopathic special operatives to discover Stennis source. Jack has a physical confrontation with one of them, and makes the now-crippled operative a lifelong enemy, bent on revenge. Did he actually change any of the tragic events of 1968? Were there unintended consequences of his actions? This historical fiction is full of political intrigue, FBI corruption, the societal tumult in the streets, organized crime, and a true picture of the jazz music scene of New Orleans at the time.

At age sixteen, James grew-up fast when his father died. He played baseball in high school and received a college scholarship. Concerned about his mother and brothers, he hoped his athletic talent would lead to a financially successful professional baseball career. Then, one day, while playing a pick-up football game, James was seriously injured and diagnosed a quadriplegic. He asked the doctor, "How bad is it?" The doctor responded, "Bad enough. You'll never walk again and possibly not move from the neck down." Thankfully, God placed James within a family that didn't accept such advice. After years of hard work, fortitude, and perseverance, he was able to return to college. After completing his bachelor's degree, it took him three years to land a teaching contract. Prospective employers saw the wheelchair not the applicant. As an educator, James received teaching and coaching awards. Confident, he decided to return to college. After completing his doctoral degree in May 2011, James became a motivational speaker encouraging other people to triumph over tragedies. He knows all of this would not have been possible without God in his life, his family's support, and his personal values – the desire to succeed in life and overcome adversities.

Arguing that the 1964 edition of Eugene O'Neill's unfinished play More Stately Mansions, prepared after the playwright's death, was missing a substantial amount of material that O'Neill intended for inclusion, Martha Bower here presents an entirely new edition of the play with this material--dialogue, character description, an entire scene, the epilogue, and large parts of other scenes--restored. Published to coincide with the centennial of O'Neill's birth, it will stand as an important contribution to O'Neill scholarship.

Hamlet In His Modern Guises written by Alexander Welsh and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-03 with Literary Criticism categories.

Focusing on Shakespeare's Hamlet as foremost a study of grief, Alexander Welsh offers a powerful analysis of its protagonist as the archetype of the modern hero. For over two centuries writers and critics have viewed Hamlet's persona as a fascinating blend of self-consciousness, guilt, and wit. Yet in order to understand more deeply the modernity of this Shakespearean hero, Welsh first situates Hamlet within the context of family and mourning as it was presented in other revenge tragedies of Shakespeare's time. Revenge, he maintains, appears as a function of mourning rather than an end in itself. Welsh also reminds us that the mourning of a son for his father may not always be sincere. This book relates the problem of dubious mourning to Hamlet's ascendancy as an icon of Western culture, which began late in the eighteenth century, a time when the thinking of past generations--or fathers--represented to many an obstacle to human progress. Welsh reveals how Hamlet inspired some of the greatest practitioners of modernity's quintessential literary form, the novel. Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Scott's Redgauntlet, Dickens's Great Expectations, Melville's Pierre, and Joyce's Ulysses all enhance our understanding of the play while illustrating a trend in which Hamlet ultimately becomes a model of intense consciousness. Arguing that modern consciousness mourns for the past, even as it pretends to be free of it, Welsh offers a compelling explanation of why Hamlet remains marvelously attractive to this day.
