This research was designed to explore the differences in toy and activity choices made by parents and occupational therapists in a preschool setting. Eight parents and three occupational therapists were given surveys requesting information about their considerations regarding the toys and activities that they present to their children and how they communicate with each other. Parents indicated that the child's interest in the toy or activity was the biggest motivator for presenting the toy or activity to the child. Therapists were more likely to focus on the educational and therapeutic value of toys and activities as well as the child's interest. When asked about communication styles, all therapists stated that they gave recommendations to parents while several parents stated that they did not receive any type of recommendation at all. Communication with therapists varied widely from several times a month to only at annual meetings or not at all. Limitations to this study include a small, less diverse population size. Future research should include further investigation into the relationships and communication styles of occupational therapists and parents, what is considered communication by both groups, and continued examination into the different aspects of activity and toy choices that are considered when creating treatments for children.

Anything to do with children's entertainment is a source of controversy: children's television programmes, musical preferences, and leisure activities are frequent sources of debate. Toys and play are often singled out for attention, particularly war toys, sex-typed toys, and video games with aggressive themes. Are these harmful to children? Are they addictive? Alternatively, can parents facilitate children's learning with educational toys? Toys, Play, and Child Development explores these and other questions. Parental attitudes and reactions towards war toys are described, as are the children's views themselves. Toys and play are shown to contribute to the development of language, imagination, and intellectual achievement and to be effective in child psychotherapy.

For many young children, parent-child interaction can be a primary source of play with others. The toys incorporated into these interactions shape the quality and quantity of parent-child communication, with electronic, sound-producing toys dampening communicative exchanges relative to traditional toys, such as wooden blocks and figurines (Sosa, 2016). In this study, I investigated whether parental preference for electronic and traditional toys differ across child gender, child vocabulary level, parental education level and the locations of the study (NYC, NY versus Ithaca, NY). I also investigated whether electronic toys, compared to traditional toys, would limit parent's language usage, parent's gestures (e.g., points) and children's speech during a 10-minute play session. The parents of thirty-two children (15 girls, 17 boys; M = 43 months, SD = 11.71) completed a survey rating their preferences for a range of traditional and electronic toys. They then selected three toys from the survey for an unstructured 10-minute play session with their child. Parents' ratings of the traditional toys were highly correlated to each other as were their ratings of the electronic toys. However, parents' ratings of the traditional toys were unrelated to their ratings of the electronic toys, indicating that they differed in their preferences for each type of toy. Parents who did not endorse electronic toys as a toy for play with their child had children with higher vocabulary scores. Interestingly, parents' preference ratings for the toys did not align with the number of electronic toys they selected for play with their child. Finally, there was no effect of toy type (traditional versus electronic) on parent or child language or behaviors during the play session.

Playing with toys as a means of environmental engagement has long been considered important in early child development (Messer, Rachford, McCarthy, & Yarrow, 1987; Wolery & Werts, 1994). However, children with highly significant disabilities often engage in toy play less frequently than their peers without disabilities (Blasco, Bailey, & Burchinal, 1993; Langley, 1985) and frequently need specialized support to promote toy play (Ivory & McCollum, 1999; Langley, 1985). Preference assessment technology was used to identify preferred sensory attributes. Those sensory attributes were embedded into a toy previously identified as nonpreferred based on selection and amount of toy play. Differences were noted in caregiver opinion of sensory preference when compared to a sensory attribute preference assessment. The initial paired-item presentation consisted of a rotation of 4 toys from the natural environment using a child-directed approach, which consisted of choice, prompting, and praise for completion of functional toy play. An additional condition added the child's preferred sensory attribute to a nonpreferred toy using the above-mentioned procedures. Results indicated that the addition of a preferred sensory attribute increased selection of that toy with 2 of 3 children, and resulted in increased independent functional toy play for all 3 children.
