Eusebius of Caesarea (263-339 CE) is one of the most important intellectuals whose writings survive from late antiquity. Con el cogito se impone en la cultura moderna el ideal –racionalista – de evidencia, es decir, la necesidad según la cual el sujeto precisa de certeza para vivir y validar su saber , porque se encuentra siempre al inicio en un estado en el que carece de seguridad, en el que la certeza le hace falta. Al igual que el paseante extraviado en un bosque, el sujeto moderno es un hombre amenazado y solo. Esta soledad y esta amenaza lejos de ser accidentales son esenciales y constitutivas de la subjetividad Moderna. El ideal de evidencia que se impone en la cultura moderna, se impone para un sujeto cuya ratio y evidencia-certeza nacen de un pensamiento de la separación, como urgencias de reorganización, como equivalentes nostálgicos de lo que ahora hace falta, como necesidad vital de una afirmación que ya no se puede hacer. Con el fin de no enajenar su ser verdadero en el elemento de una exterioridad de la que hay que desconfiar, el hombre pasa así de ser el destinatario de la verdad a ser el subjectum desde donde se originan verdades relativas, es decir, la verdad subjetivizada por la prueba íntima que de ella hace el sujeto necesitado de certeza, es decir, de seguridad.
