Seventeen essays make up the body of this anthology. Most of the authors are Latin Americans (although some of them work in other regions), and thus we might say that this volume is, in a very approximate sense, a showcase of recent Latin-American ontology and metaphysics. The remaining authors--Pierre Aubenque, Barry Smith, Lorenzo Peña and James Hamilton--are distinguished teachers who have had important contacts with the Latin-American philosophical community. The articles in this anthology address some of the central questions in ontology and metaphysics: the possibility of a science of being (Aubenque), the different possible approaches to ontology (Hurtado), the recent application of ontology to informatics (Smith), guise theory and its Leibnizian antecedents (Herrera), the reduction of space and time to phenomenological properties (Rodríguez Larreta), the Newtonian ontology of space and time (Benítez and Robles), the relation between truth and the so-called "truth-makers" (Rodríguez Pereyra), the ontological position of the Pyrrhonic skeptic (Junqueira Smith), the limits and difficulties of metaphysical realism (Cabanchik, Pereda), the defense of physicalist or emergentist positions regarding the mental (Pérez), the metaphysical nature of persons (Naishtat), the ontology of cultural entities (Peña), political ontology (Nudler), the relation between ontology and literature (Hamilton), the ontology of art (Tomasini). Some of the works (e.g., those Aubenque and Robles) approach the question from a historical perspective: others examine the most recent philosophical literature on the problems focalized (e.g., those by Pérez and Rodríguez Pereyra), and others offer new approaches (e.g., those of Rodríguez Larreta, Peña or Nudler) to a specific problematic area.

Primero nos traslada al momento histórico en el que se concedía a la cultura un lugar de honor en la psicología. Describe lo que sucedió cuando esta disciplina fue englobada dentro de las ciencias naturales a finales del siglo pasado y la cultura llegó a ser una variable causal más. Una concepción que distorsionaba tanto la relación cultura - mente como los métodos necesarios para su estudio. La alternativa que el autor nos presenta trata a la cultura como el medio idiosincrásico de la vida humana, un medio saturado con artefactos, residuo de la experiencia de generaciones anteriores. El autor sostiene que la mediación a través de la cultura es la principal característica del pensamiento humano. Michael COLE, uno de los líderes de este movimiento, demuestra la utilidad de esta nueva concepción aplicándola a diversas cuestiones teóricas, metodológicas y prácticas en el estudio del desarrollo humano. Entre éstas destacan las relaciones entre naturaleza y educación, los procesos a través de los que la cultura posibilita o constriñe el desarrollo, el rol de la alfabetización y de la educación en el desarrollo cognitivo, y los procedimientos para diseñar nuevas formas de acción con capacidad para promover el desarrollo infantil. Estamos ante una extraordinaria síntesis de teoría y trabajo empírico que da forma a este nuevo ámbito de especialización que denominamos psicología cultural. Este libro puede considerarse una obra fundacional en esta emergente disciplina; una clara exposición de la psicología cultural en cuanto teoría general del pensamiento y acción humana. Michael COLE es Catedrático de Universidad de Comunicación y Psicología y Director del Laboratorio de Cognición Humana Comparada en la Universidad de California, San Diego, USA. Esta obra ha recibido los siguientes premios: - Premio de la Virginia and Warren Stone Fund en el apartado de publicaciones sobre educación y sociedad, en 1995. - Mención Honorífica en la categoría de Psicología otorgada por la Asociación de Editores Norteamericanos, en 1996.
