O livro vincula-se à iniciativa Educação, Pobreza e Desigualdade Social, por meio de uma parceria entre a Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) e o Ministério da Educação. Os textos da coletânea foram produzidos por estudantes do Curso de Aperfeiçoamento em Educação, Pobreza e Desigualdade Social, realizado entre os meses de fevereiro e julho de 2019 e fruto da referida iniciativa. Os textos visam a provocar o debate e a reflexão, sobretudo no que se refere aos processos de educação envolvendo sujeitos que vivenciam a pobreza, debate extremamente necessário em um país onde a pobreza assola uma parcela significativa da população. Consideramos tal abordagem importante e necessária, pois coloca no centro do debate conceitos relevantes para se pensar a democratização educacional, reforçando a necessidade de um olhar mais amplo para os processos educacionais a partir da análise da ação estatal frente ao fenômeno da pobreza, entendido como multidimensional e histórico.

O livro Vouchers na Educação: o pobre e o rico na mesma escola traz um olhar inovador (e surpreendente) para o debate público sobre um dos temas fundamentais para o desenvolvimento do país: a qualidade da educação básica. Como o poder público não vem conseguindo melhorar o ensino nas últimas décadas – mesmo aplicando cada vez mais recursos no setor –, é hora de se pensar em alternativas. Trata-se, sem dúvida, de uma proposta mergulhada em polêmicas e que desafia frontalmente a tradição escolar brasileira, colocando em xeque o status quo acadêmico no campo da educação. A quem for ler este livro, o autor faz apenas um pedido: que analise e discuta as ideias apresentadas sem se deixar influenciar a priori pelos tradicionais dogmas e preconceitos tão comuns entre educadores e formuladores de políticas públicas na área de educação. Educar é estar sempre aberto a novas possibilidades e, talvez, seja mesmo necessário mudar profundamente a forma de se pensar o ensino básico no país. Afinal, independentemente de ideologias, o direito a uma educação de qualidade para todos os cidadãos deve ser considerado sempre em primeiro lugar.
