The portable guide to potable purveyors. “From alehouses, inns, and taverns, to the pubs we know today, Gordon Thorburn explains all . . . Cheers!” —Best of British Is there really a pub called The Toad Rock Retreat? Which one town has the pubs with both the longest and the shortest names? How many Lions, Crowns, and Horses are there? How many pubs are called The Speculation, The Triple Plea, and The Welcome Stranger? Why would you give your pub a name like The Geese Have Gone Over the Water? The author, in his valiant attempt to answer these and many other questions, has produced a book which is surely essential reading. What exactly is a pub? What should pubs be like? Why do we think that way? Is there a perfect pub? Can we imagine one that nobody would ever go in? Who does go in pubs, and why, and for what? Where is the straightest pub crawl? So, how did we get where we are, and where do we go from here? Whether it’s to The King’s Head, The Queen’s Arms, The Three Legs or The Eel’s Foot, be sure to take this book with you. “An entertaining, amusing account of pub life and culture. It is a book for dipping into rather than reading solidly, and is definitely memorable.” —Monsters & Critics

Dublin is renowned for its amazing profusion of pubs and for its exuberant pub culture. In Dublin Pub Life and Lore, Professor Kevin Kearns examines the history of this phenomenon by speaking to old publicans, barmen and regular customers, relating the story of Dublin pubs and their patrons in an engaging and entertaining fashion. Traditionally in Ireland, the public house or 'pub' was the centre of a community's social life and a social institution ranking second in importance only to the parish church. Pubs ranged from dusky watering holes frequented by labourers, dockers and shawlies to elegant Victorian gin palaces where the gentry and literati gathered. Along the Dublin quays there were dives filled with scoundrels, prostitutes and misfits of every sort. Following the success of his bestselling classic Dublin Tenement Life, Kevin Kearns has researched and created a wonderful oral historical chronicle of Dublin's pub life. Based on conversations with old publicans, pub 'regulars' and long-serving barmen, Dublin Pub Life and Lore captures the folklore, customs, characters and wit of the traditional Dublin public house. The Rise And Fall Of The Irish Pub written by Robert E Connolly and has been published by Independently Published this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-08 with categories.

This book begins with a history of the Irish pub and its origins. It then describes the development of the Irish Pub beginning in the early 1980s when emigrants began to return to Ireland as its economy improved. They created the impetus for a whole new type of pub experience known as the "Superpub." The book explains how these new pubs developed and were phenomenally successful in the period of the Irish economy known as the Celtic Tiger. With the economic crash of the middle part of the first decade of the twentieth century, compounded by multiple other factors, these superpubs were no longer viable as the customers who made them successful were no longer financially able to support the turnover necessary for their success. This marked the fall of these Irish pubs. While some of these pubs have reinvented themselves, the superpubs remain a distant memory.

The Old Dog And Duck written by Albert Jack and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-03 with Social Science categories.

This is a book for everyone who has ever wondered why pubs should be called The Cross Keys, The Dew Drop Inn or The Hope and Anchor. You'll be glad to know that there are very good - strange and memorable - reasons behind them all. After much research about (and in) pubs, Albert Jack brings together the stories behind pub names to reveal how they offer fascinating and subversive insights on our history, customs, attitudes and jokes in just the same way that nursery rhymes do. The Royal Oak, for instance, commemorates the tree that hid Charles II from Cromwell's forces after his defeat at Worcester; The Bag of Nails is a corruption of the Bacchanals, the crazed followers of Bacchus, the god of wine and drunkenness; The Cat and the Fiddle a mangling of Catherine La Fidele and a guarded gesture of support for Henry VIII's first, Catholic, wife Catherine of Aragon; plus many, many more. Here too are even more facts about everything from ghosts to drinking songs to the rules of cribbage and shove hapenny, showing that, ultimately, the story of pub history is really the story of our own popular history
