El presente libro examina los procedimientos de gobierno de la Isla de Cuba por España a lo largo del siglo XIX, la demanda cambiante de autogobierno limitado -desde las élites a las clases medias-, la apertura de espacios públicos y la articulación de una activa sociedad civil en el último cuarto de siglo, así como las condiciones internas en las que fragua el acceso a la soberanía después de 1898 y durante la construcción inicial de la República. Establecida la esfera del poder y los reacomodos a los que aspiraron los sectores privilegiados, elementos que una vez desanudados facilitarán la disgregación de las afinidades y la extensión de una conciencia diferenciada, el libro centra su atención en el periodo que comienza en 1878 y llega hasta 1906, y lo hace a través de dos guías: la extensión de la sociedad civil durante la última fase de dominio español y la construcción de la autoridad republicana a partir de 1898, cuando en presencia del interlocutor norteamericano se definieron los trazos de la futura sociedad y de su Estado. José A. Piqueras es catedrático de Historia Contemporánea de la Universitat Jaume I. Es autor, entre otros, de los libros La revolución democrática. Cuestión social, colonialismo y grupos de presión (Madrid, 1992) y Cuba, emporio y colonia (Madrid, 2003). Ha compilado las obras Diez nuevas miradas de historia de Cuba (Castellón, 1998), Azúcar y esclavitud en el final del trabajo forzado (Madrid, 2002) y Las Antillas en la era de las Luces y la Revolución (Madrid, 2005). Codirige la revista Historia Social.
