Friedrich Nietzsche qued� impresionado por la representaci�n del poema de un ser sobrehumano, y escribi� m�sica para �l. Byron escribi� este "drama metaf�sico", como �l la llamaba, despu�s de su fracaso matrimonial en un esc�ndalo en medio de acusaciones de irregularidades sexuales y una relaci�n incestuosa entre Byron y su media hermana, Augusta Leigh. Atacado por la prensa y condenado al ostracismo por la sociedad londinense, Byron huy� de Inglaterra a Suiza en 1816 y nunca regres�. Debido a que Manfred fue escrito inmediatamente despu�s de esto y porque Manfred se refiere a un personaje principal torturado por su propio sentido de culpabilidad por un delito que no se puede mencionar, algunos cr�ticos consideran Manfred ser autobiogr�fico, o confesional, incluso.
