Richard has been described as 'Australia's Greatest Living Poet' (thanks Mum) and 'The Greatest Creative Force in The Universe since The Big Bang' (thanks Dad). His interest in matters philosophical and political is reflected in his poetry. About PHILOSOBABBLE he says, "I've always liked the pithy one-liner, the phrase that succinctly states a truth, like 'I'd rather be the man who bought the Brooklyn Bridge than the man who sold it' (Will Rogers) or 'There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up' (John Holmes). As Samuel Johnson put it, "He is a benefactor of mankind who contracts the great rules of life into short sentences, that may be easily impressed on the memory and so recur habitually to the mind". Whilst agreeing wholeheartedly with the above sentiment, not everything is capable of being condensed into just a few words, is it? Sometimes you need a few more syllables to better make your point or state your truth. And that's the intention with these poems. Now, I try to make my poems rhyme and scan. I realize this is a bit passé these days but I like the cerebral challenge and, well, I just think poetry should - as the American poet Robert Frost put it, "I would as soon write free verse as play tennis with the net down". It's not always easy but, to steal a phrase from JFK, "we choose to do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard". If and to what extent I have succeeded, I leave you to decide. By the way, I've included some other, non-poetry, stuff that also tries to make a point. I hope you enjoy it.
