Jonathan Cohen's translation of Poemas de buen amor... y a veces de fantasía shows another side entirely of Mir's work to that seen in Contracanto a Walt Whitman / Countersong to Walt Whitman: intensely political in the Countersong, sensual and erotic in Poems of Good Love. There is a challenge that the translator rises to in making English language poems that are truthful to the deliberately opaquer language of this collection in comparison to the communicative clarity of Mir's more overtly political collections. Here, Mir sets himself the task of writing about love in a way that is truthful to the Marxist historical materialism he embraced, in contrast to what he saw as the conventions of love poetry where love is seen as some kind of disembodied spiritual experience. As the introduction by Silvio Torres-Saillant makes clear, there were negatives as well as positives that followed from the task Mir set himself. It is obvious that fifty years ago (1969), feminism had not yet penetrated Mir's Latin American Marxism.

These poems and short stories are arranged in chronological order as they were inspired by a long-term love affair and written from 1989 to 2007. For the perceptive reader one can trace the ups and downs of our relationship. These 18 years were filled with love and passion. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. These inspired poems were written mostly during the first ten years. As it became obvious that my dream would never come true, the inspiration dwindled and fewer poems were written in later years. The heartbreaking part of this 18 year love affair is that I am not sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my unconditional deep love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry, but I never knew what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I think and hope not. I was convinced that she loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a love that I had only dreamed possible. Each image carefully placed in this book carries a very special meaning for the poem and for our love journey. Even the clock photo carries a meaning related to the untimely death of US. Each word is carefully chosen to convey my feelings. While I tried to express my love in poetic words, there was an enormous amount left unsaid. I can only hope you find meaning and joy in the thoughts and feelings these words convey to you. A fuller story of this passionate love affair will be unfolded in an upcoming book.

Summer Breeze is a poem of admiration of a person who is in love with. The person fantasizes the love and affection within. Sunsets to your Dreams is a poem about ones love lost and has anger and frustration, venting out, feeling utter bitterness. Tears and Raindrops is poem about a person who has seen life in its brightest moments and saddest times. Knows the difference of a happy life but nevertheless reminiscences times when there were moments of tears of happiness and even pain. Tulips and Roses is a romantic poem of love toward his loved one. Warm Arms is a total romantic fantasy poem, who believes his loved one is in love with him. Winter Moon is a poem about a sad lonely person, reflecting pleasant times and good memories he lived in. But even in his sadness, he still loves his loved one very close to his heart. A Happy Sigh is a poem is about a contrast of feelings, of hopeful wishes and pleasant memories, broken hearts and smiles of joy, tears and hope, selfish deeds and restless kind, dark secrets and doubtful minds, and thoughts of fond memories and precious moments. All Is Not Fair in Love & War is a poem about love and longing for love that is lostjustifying that love is very precious and holy or pure happiness and contentment. As it was not so, he demand and pleads with God why its so, and laments in justifying himself, why did god make love so unfair and mean and weeps for his lost love. Seriously Thoughtless Driving is a poem about the consequences of drunk driving and one whos disturbed with anguish, anger, and anxiety. Sultry Summers is about lazy feelings and simple moments on a cool summers day on the beach.
