De musas, aeroplanos y trincheras reúne veinte estudios sobre poesía y poetas españoles contemporáneos de los últimos cien años, desde el influjo de Juan Ramón Jiménez y Antonio Machado en los jóvenes poetas del 27 hasta el último libro de Lorenzo Oliván, Nocturno casi (2014). Este libro trata de mostrar hasta qué punto los autores son necesaria y previamente lectores, hasta qué punto leen de acuerdo con un inconsciente ideológico y estético, y lo hacen como una forma de construir su yo literario, para leerse a sí mismos a partir de los autores leídos, para definirse mediante la tradición lejana o inmediata, incluso para situarse en el sistema o el campo literario del que forman parte, trazando afinidades y diferencias con respecto a los demás habitantes de esa tradición o de ese campo. Escribir presupone saber leer, los autores comienzan por ser lectores; lectores de otros y, lógicamente, lectores de sí mismos mientras escriben y cuando su obra ya está constituida como objeto. En cierto modo, este libro, que no es un manual, propone un canon, por lo demás bastante asentado. Si lo hace, es porque a la vez propone, también en cierto modo, no una historia de la lectura, una historia literaria del lector a partir de los autores seleccionados o una biografía de estos como lectores, sino una historia de la literatura española contemporánea muy parcial e incompleta, que solo resalta una serie de lógicas internas dentro de otras muchas posibles, pero que al fin y al cabo resultan significativas para trazar un entramado histórico a partir de la dialéctica entre escritura y lectura.

Siglos XVIII y XIX dashes the commonplace that there was little novelistic activity during the eighteenth century through the inclusion of selections from a wide range of fiction. In addition, it incorporates fascinating new research on the theoretical basis for the development of the novel during the 1700s. This anthology also challenges the notion that the baroque withered after Calder—n. Examples from the works of transitional poets and playwrights illustrates that baroque styles and themes continued to be popular throught much of the century. In the area of nineteenth-century literature, Siglos XVIII y XIX is the first anthology to provide a truly balanced view of the political, social, and literary debates of the period. It includes ideological prose by a wide variety of thinkers: conservatives as well as liberals, Neo-Catholics as well as Krausists. Unlike other collections on the market, this volume gives a thorough account of the development of the historical novel and of the novela de costumbres contempor‡neas during both the first and second halves of the century. While in their critical introductions the editors avail themselves of the very latest research, they avoid modern (and often inaccurate) terminology, preferring the terminology used by nineteenth-century theorists themselves.
