La Guerra Civil cortó bruscamente la riqueza poética inmediatamente anterior a su estallido, y en los primeros años de la dictadura hubo que reconstruir no sólo un país en ruinas, sino también una poesía gravemente mutilada por las muertes (Unamuno, Lorca, A. Machado, Miguel Hernández…) y el exilio (casi todos los miembros del 27, Juan Ramón, León Felipe…). En ese contexto nace la poesía de posguerra, que si bien en un principio, como dice Emilio Alarcos, era natural que «después de las hostilidades, como reacción ante una realidad hosca, buscase la tranquilidad de ánimo, el silencio que adormeciera pasiones y rencores», pronto se escora hacia el lado contrario: la angustia existencial y el compromiso político. Así, en los años cuarenta la poesía quedó dividida en dos bandos contrapuestos: Espadaña contra Garcilaso, «poesía desarraigada» versus «poesía arraigada», frente a los cuales surgieron voces disidentes. El monopolio de la «poesía social» a mitad de siglo, exigido por las circunstancias históricas, hizo que la promoción del 50 comenzará la renovación artística del género, mientras que en los sesenta, los novísimos, nacidos en plena efervescencia del movimiento hippie y de las revueltas estudiantiles en toda Europa (París, Praga…), continúan esa misión enlazando con los autores de preguerra y formándose intelectualmente con las lecturas de los más importantes poetas europeos y americanos. Estamos, pues, ante una poesía, la creada durante la dictadura, de gran riqueza y variedad tanto estética como ideológica.
