È alla coscienza politica attiva dei giovani che Machado si rivolge: «A voi studenti è riservato un ruolo importante nella rivoluzione... voi studenti dovete fare politica, altrimenti la politica sarà fatta contro di voi». «Ho percorso molte strade, e aperto molti sentieri; cento mari ho traversato e attraccato in cento rive.» Antonio Machado nacque a Siviglia nel 1875. Partecipò fin da giovanissimo alla vita artistica di Madrid. Nel 1903 pubblicò Soledades. Fu insegnante di francese in diverse città spagnole. Risale al 1912 la prima edizione di Campos de Castilla e al 1917 di Poesías completas. Con il fratello Manuel scrisse diverse opere teatrali. Scoppiata la guerra civile nel 1936, seguì il destino dei repubblicani. Nel gennaio del 1939 fuggì in Francia, dove morì il mese seguente.
