Nach der Machtübernahme der Nazis verließen zahlreiche Schriftsteller Deutschland. Dennoch wurde die deutschsprachige Literatur der kommenden Jahrzehnte nicht nur vom politischen Engagement prominenter Flüchtlinge geprägt, jenseits des öffentlichen Diskurses wurden auch "ästhetische" Folgen des Nationalsozialismus für die moderne Kultur reflektiert. Der Blick des Autors auf den ferngerückten Leser veränderte sich ebenso wie der Blick auf die eigene Rolle als Erzähler. Damit änderten sich auch die poetischen Ziele. Das Exil wurde zum Ort der Reflexion, der Beschäftigung mit ästhetischer Theorie, z.B. bei Brecht oder Benjamin. Kulturelle Aporien wurden in eine erkenntniskritische Poetik übersetzt, der Bezug zwischen Fiktion und Realität wurde problematisiert. Diese Entwicklung prägte die poetische Produktion bekannter und vergessener Autoren - exemplarisch wird dies an verschiedenen Romanen von Alfred Döblin, Veza Canetti, Soma Morgenstern und anderen. Der Exilroman führte den modernen Romandiskurs der 20er Jahre weiter, doch er fand neue poetische Lösungen. Das Konzept eines "einfachen" Erzählens setzte sich durch, vieldeutige, auch verstörende Bilder traten neben philosophische Reflexionen. Indem der Exilroman seine Sprachen und Fiktionen thematisierte, veränderte er den Blick auf den Text und auf seinen Bezug zur Realität. Die fiktionalen Entwürfe des Exils erzeugen komplexe imaginäre Gegenwelten zu einer fragwürdigen Realität - die Ästhetik der Moderne wurde so dynamisch weiterentwickelt. Im Modell einer »Poetik des Exils« - zwischen Kulturaporetik, mimetischer Theorie und der Analyse von Weltentwürfen im Roman - konstituiert sich ein Lektüreparadigma, das vielfältige Zugänge zur Exilliteratur bietet.

In recent years Culture Studies, Anthropology, German Studies, History, Political Psychology, and other fields have used the concept of 'exile' in close connection with terms like migration, border crossing, identity, and transnationality. Views of a homogeneous culture and of centricity collide with ideas like multiculturalism, pluralism, creolization, and the globalization of differences. A transit-culture, inhabited by the flaneur and the nomad, is supposed to have replaced citizenship in a nation. At the same time, there can be no doubt that the experience of those writers, artists and intellectuals who were driven out of Germany and Europe by the Nazis was in many ways unique. This book investigates the exile experience in a theoretical and comparative way by exploring the possibilities and limitations of concepts like diaspora, de-localization, and transit-culture for understanding the lives and works of German and Austrian refugees from Nazi persecution. It revisits the interaction of the exiles with the culture of their host countries in light of recent debates about migration and identity studies and it analyzes texts, paintings and other methods of artistic expression which connect the experience of the refugees of 1933 with postmodern notions of de-localization, hybridity, and marginalization.

Zwischen 1933 und 1945 dokumentierten zahlreiche Geflüchtete ihre Erfahrungen mit dem NS-Regime, um die (Welt)-Öffentlichkeit über dessen Verbrechen aufzuklären. Mittels rhetorischer und narrativer Verfahren und dem gattungsspezifischen Referenzversprechen implizieren diese Texte eine komplizitäre Rezeptionshaltung, die konstitutiv für ihre Poetik ist. Die vorliegende Studie bringt auf innovative Weise Ansätze aus der Exilforschung, der internationalen Autobiographie- und Life Writing-Forschung sowie der literaturwissenschaftlichen Pragmatik zusammen. Dabei entwickelt sie das Konzept der ‚Komplizenschaft‘ als eine rezeptionsästhetische Analysekategorie, die den komplexen und weitaus unterschätzten Poetiken der testimonialen Exilautobiographik Rechnung trägt. In eingehenden Fallstudien werden Autobiographien von Stefan Zweig, Sebastian Haffner und Catherine Klein untersucht.

The biography of H.G. Adler (1910-88) is the story of a survivor of Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, and two other concentration camps who not only lived through the greatest cataclysm of the 20th century, but someone who also devoted his literary and scholarly career to telling the story of those who perished in over two dozen books of fiction, poetry, history, sociology, and religion. And yet for much of his life he remained almost entirely unknown. A writer's writer, a scholar of seminal, pioneering works on the Holocaust, a renowned radio essayist in postwar Germany, a last representative of the Prague Circle of literature headed by Kafka, a key contributor to the prosecution in the trial of Adolf Eichmann, Adler was a man of his time whose times lived through him. His is the story of many others, but also one that is singularly his own. And at its heart lies a profound story of love and perseverance amid the loss of his first wife, Gertrud Klepetar, who accompanied her mother to the gas chamber in Auschwitz, and the courtship and extended correspondence with Bettina Gross, a Prague artist who escaped to the Britain, only to later learn that her mother had also been in Theresienstadt with Adler before her eventual death in Auschwitz.
