This book argues for the importance of popular music in negotiations of national identity, and Germanness in particular. By discussing diverse musical genres and commercially and critically successful songs at the heights of their cultural relevance throughout seventy years of post-war German history, Soundtracking Germany describes how popular music can function as a language for “writing” national narratives. Running chronologically, all chapters historically contextualize and critically discuss the cultural relevance of the respective genre before moving into a close reading of one particularly relevant and appellative case study that reveals specific interrelations between popular music and constructions of Germanness. Close readings of these sonic national narratives in different moments of national transformations reveal changes in the narrative rhetoric as this book explores how Germanness is performatively constructed, challenged, and reaffirmed throughout the course of seventy years.

The years following the attacks of September 11, 2001 have seen the publication of a wide range of scientific analyses of terrorism. Literary studies seem to lag curiously behind this general shift of academic interest. The present volume sets out to fill this gap. It does so in the conviction that the study of literature has much to offer to the transdisciplinary investigation of terror, not only with respect to the present post-9/11 situation but also with respect to earlier historical contexts. Literary texts are media of cultural self-reflection, and as such they have always played a crucial role in the discursive response to terror, both contributing to and resisting dominant conceptions of the causes, motivations, dynamics, and aftermath of terrorist violence. By bringing together experts from various fields and by combining case studies of works from diverse periods and national literatures, the volume Literature and Terrorism chooses a diachronic and comparative perspective. It is interested in the specific cultural work performed by narrative and dramatic literature in the face of terrorism, focusing on literature's ambivalent relationship to other, competing modes of discourse.

A companion to contemporary German crime fiction for English-speaking audiences is overdue. Starting with the earlier Swiss “classics” Glauser and Dürrenmatt and including a number of important Austrian authors, such as Wolf Haas and Heinrich Steinfest, this volume will cover the essential writers, genres, and themes of crime fiction written in German. Where necessary and appropriate, crime fiction in media other than writing (TV-series, movies) will be included. Contemporary social and political developments, such as gender issues, life in a multicultural society, and the afterlife of German fascism today, play a crucial role in much of recent German crime fiction. Die Studie zielt auf eine literaturhistorisch fundierte Rekonstruktion von Heiner Müllers Poetik des Grotesken, die als Antwort auf die krisenhaften Umbrüche und historischen Katastrophen des 20. Jahrhunderts gelesen wird. Es ist der erste Versuch dieser Art über einen Autor, der sich zwar in Schriften und Interviews wiederholt poetologisch geäußert, im Unterschied zu Brecht, Dürrenmatt oder Hacks aber keine explizite Poetik hinterlassen hat. Die Autorin geht den Voraussetzungen, Formen und Strukturen des Grotesken in Müllers Dramatik nach. Dazu werden die zahlreich dort auffindbaren, historisch vermittelten Motive und Textverfahren des Grotesken (Karnevalismus, Schwarze Romantik) analysiert, in ihrer Entwicklung dokumentiert und neue Strukturen auf ihre wirkungsästhetischen Implikationen hin untersucht. Darüber hinaus erfährt Müllers Werk eine Verortung im Kontext der dramen- und theaterästhetischen Diskussionen der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, die auch seine Hinwendung zur Postmoderne (neu) kontextualisiert. Die Untersuchung leistet somit über die Müller-Forschung hinaus einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Groteskenforschung und will auch einer Kulturgeschichte des Grotesken neue Aspekte hinzuzufügen.
