"The radical prophets of the English civil wars were fascinating figures, living at the very margins of seventeenth-century English society. Combining a devout belief in the power of divine inspiration with a passionate desire for social change and a distinctly eccentric rhetorical style, these men and women brazenly challenged civil and religious authority and flouted social decorum, unnerving their contemporaries and fanning fears of social anarchy. Unfortunately, far too little is known about the fate of their ideas, their writings, and their successors between the restoration of Charles II and the rise of the poetry of sensibility in the mid-eighteenth century. Too often they are assumed merely to have disappeared soon after 1660, snuffed out by a restored monarchy and an Augustan culture antithetical to their aims, and lost to sight until they were rediscovered in the late 1720s by a new generation of poets intrigued by vatic inspiration." "The purpose of this study is to suggest a rather different legacy for the radical prophets of the mid-seventeenth century. It contends, first of all, that prophecy was a significant genre for the writers of the Restoration and early eighteenth century - far more prevalent, more pervasive, and more influential in the decades following 1660 than has traditionally been acknowledged. From Butler's Hudibras, to Dryden's Mac Flecknoe, to the portrayal of Settle in Pope's first version of The Dunciad, prophets rant, rage, and wreak havoc through even the most canonical of Augustan texts, revealing the period's obsession with the figure of the radical prophet."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This carefully crafted ebook: "America A Prophecy (Illuminated Manuscript with the Original Illustrations of William Blake)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. America a Prophecy is a 1793 prophetic book by English poet and illustrator William Blake. It is engraved on eighteen plates, and survives in fourteen known copies. It is the first of Blake's Continental prophecies. America was one of the few works that Blake describes as "illuminated printing", those of which were either hand coloured or colour printed with the ink being placed on the copperplate before printed. Early sketches for America were also included in his notebook, which Blake used between 1790 and 1793. William Blake (1757 – 1827) was a British poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. Blake proclaimed the supremacy of the imagination over the rationalism and materialism of the 18th-century. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age.

Poetry. African American Studies. Native American Studies. When Thoreau wrote in his Journal in 1841, "Good poetry seems so simple and natural a thing that when we meet it we wonder that all men are not always poets," and when Whitman describes Leaves of Grass as a "language experiment," they are expressing an approach to poetry that never ceased and has grown continuously during recent decades. This groundbreaking anthology from the early 1970s takes such an approach in presenting the poetry of the North American continent, from pre-Columbian times to the present. It includes many recognized poets of the period, though appearing here in often unexpected contexts, and others who have been overlooked but whose contributions to the development of poetry are revolutionary. Starting from their own moment, the editors have read back into the more distant past and selected from broad American traditions works that had thitherto been considered outside the realm of poetry proper: the native poetry of the American continent, African-American sermons, blues and gospels, and the sacred, often innovative poetry of such radical religious groups as the Shakers. The book takes its title from William Blake's poem presenting the American Revolution as not only a powerful, promising and problematic historical event but the birth of a new development in man's consciousness--one that finds complex expression in the poetry of a continent. Selections mostly appear non-chronologically in juxtapositions suggesting what T. S. Eliot called the "simultaneous order" of all poetries of all times.

The last volumes in the series of William Blake's Illuminated Books reveal the writer and artist as a prophet driven by a sense of apocalyptic urgency. Blake conceived and executed The Continental Prophecies and The Urizen Books in the early 1790s, capturing the intellectual and spiritual turmoil of the American and French revolutions. Here, for the first time, the general reader will encounter Blake's most intense vision in reproductions that do justice to the originals, accompanied by texts, comprehensive notes and commentaries, and detailed interpretations of the designs. The Continental Prophecies, which comprises "America," "Europe," and "The Song of Los," presents Blake's critical reckoning with the history of his own times. Marked by a particularly close integration of word and image, the books form a mythical plot from historical events and criticize the intricate structure of social oppression that the author attributes to organized state religion. Each of the three books attempts to point a way toward the process of millennial liberation. These volumes complete the six-part series of William Blake's Illuminated Books, including Jerusalem, Songs of Innocence and of Experience (now available in paperback), The Early Illuminated Books, and Milton, A Poem, all published by Princeton University Press.

Examines dissident conceptions of space in the British Romantic eraRadical Romantics is about utopias and failed utopias, about cities that are palimpsests, and about the unwieldy span of the ocean. From William Blake's visionary poetry to Lord Byron's Eastern romances, from prophetic pamphlets to travel narratives, texts of the Romantic era make use of imaginative spaces to reveal the contours and limits of territorial sovereignty. In doing so, they raise fundamental questions about our understanding of both territorial and imagined space. What are the means by which people can conceive of geographical space without resorting to the terms of nationalism? Is it possible to imagine a space beyond territory, as movement itself? How can we articulate the overlap between mapped and lived space? Key Features Engages with the critical frameworks of cultural geography, cartography, and the burgeoning field of oceanic studiesReformulates theories of colonization and empire in the Romantic periodPuts canonical poetry in dialogue with travel tales and prophetic tracts
