Starred Review from Booklist: "This robust volume is a testament to the fortitude of a great American poet's work... [a] landmark collection." From the Introduction by Terry Tempest Williams: "Jim Harrison...was among the great ones—an elevated soul in all his unruliness who favored his senses and courted the wild on the page and in the world. His was a storied life that loomed large, and we are the beneficiaries. 'Such a powerful wounded poet—wrote as if he had to sing with a cut throat . . . and he did have to sing,' said Jorie Graham." Jim Harrison: Complete Poems is the definitive collection from one of America’s iconic writers. Introduced by activist and naturalist writer Terry Tempest Williams, this tour de force contains every poem Harrison published over his fifty-year career, as well as a section of previously unpublished "Last Poems." Here are the nature-based lyrics of his early work, the high-velocity ghazals, a harrowing prose-poem “correspondence” with a Russian suicide, the riverine suites, fearless meditations inspired by the Zen monk Crazy Cloud, and a joyous conversation in haiku-like gems with friend and fellow poet Ted Kooser. Weaving throughout these 1000 pages are Harrison’s legendary passions and appetites, his love songs and lamentations, and a clarion call to pay attention to the life you are actually living. Jim Harrison: Complete Poems confirms that Jim Harrison is a talented storyteller with a penetrating eye for details, or as Publishers Weeklycalled him, “an untrammeled renegade genius... a poet talking to you instead of around himself, while doing absolutely brilliant and outrageous things with language.” NOTE:Jim Harrison: Complete Poems also appears as a three-volume box set. Print run limited to 750 copies. Each volume is introduced by a different writer: Colum McCann, Joy Williams, and John Freeman. The box set retails for $85 and ISBN is 9781556596414.

Excerpt from Story-Telling Poems: Selected and Arranged for Story-Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children's Own Reading There is an inexhaustible source of fine story-telling material to be found in narrative poetry. Fables, myths, legends, tales, roman tic or historical in treatment, are told in rhythmic form, and often in a logical manner that makes it easy to retell the plots. If the story-teller learns her story by read ing over and over again a ballad or other story-telling poem, and retells the same in simple prose paraphrase, she will find that her vocabulary is enriched, and that the rhythm of the original lends a swing and added charm to her prose rendering of the poem. The Storytellers and Other Poems is Thomas Frosch's fourth book of poetry. The poems are organized into several sections. "Journeys" includes a voyage to the childhood of the author's father on New York's Lower East Side, where, among other imaginary and real encounters, he is dispatched to get knishes for Freud and Jung, learns about horse thieves, and witnesses the accidental death of his sister. The section also includes a journey of tricksters from different times and cultures to a banquet; lunch orders of famous authors; and the tale of a detective on assignment in Disneyland. "Time Pieces" includes a series of short poems on the seasons and a variety of dramatic moments like a surprisingly peaceful gathering of different African animals at a desert well, a batter's getting hit by a pitch, and the sound of Covid ambulances on a perfect spring day. The first part of "Adaptations," "Pictures into Words," includes a narrative based on Douglas Anderson's "Desert Plain," which appears on the cover of this volume. The second part, "Words into Other Words," adapts passages by Dante, Chaucer, and Housman, and a beer commercial, and it also includes an updated, two-page version of Schnitzler's 1897 Reigen, in which the lovers communicate by cell phone. In "Storytellers" are various scenes of creativity, written, oral, and visual, including an author's call to a computer help line that turns into an encounter with a muse. Here too is the book's extended title poem that celebrates the small ceramic figurines known as Storytellers. "Close By and Far Away" tells of experiences that are distant in one way and inwardly resonant in another. Death is entertained by a woman who has no respect for him, and whom he comes to miss when she's gone; the famous poetic nightingales of Europe make a sudden appearance in sunshine on Long Island on an ideal day; and a bunch of seaweed makes its slow voyage to immortality in the Sargasso Sea. The poems in the final section, "Taking Care," concern taking care, or not, of others, of the environment, and, as in a poem about a saxophonist practicing in the park, of one's chosen work.
