La presente investigación titulada: "Democracia directa en Ecuador y Colombia, la Revocatoria del Mandato para Alcaldes: factores que determinan la recurrencia ciudadana para su utilización", se enmarca dentro de los estudios de la Democracia Directa, entendida como una alternativa capaz de generar escenarios propicios para la configuración de políticas públicas y plantea como interrogante central: ¿Qué factores explican la variabilidad de la recurrencia ciudadana al uso de la revocatoria del mandato para alcaldes en Colombia y Ecuador? Para encontrar respuestas a esta interrogante, aquí se realiza un análisis a través del método comparado en el que se trata de establecer en cuál de los dos países los ciudadanos recurren más al uso de la revocatoria del mandato para alcaldes. Para tal efecto se han estipulado tres variables explicativas: el Diseño Institucional adoptado por cada país para accionar la revocatoria; el nivel de Cultura Política que posee la ciudadanía de cada país; y finalmente, el nivel de Capital Social que poseen los ciudadanos de cada país. El documento se divide en tres partes: en primera instancia se aborda la importancia del estudio de la democracia directa y sus formas de accionarla para seguidamente reconstruir a partir de la literatura especializada el estado del debate sobre el uso de este tipo de democracia y a partir de ello se establecerá el marco teórico. En segunda instancia, se realiza una revisión de los antecedentes de la evolución que ha sufrido la revocatoria del mandato en el ordenamiento constitucional de los dos países. En tercera y última instancia, se realiza el análisis comparado propiamente dicho sobre el estado actual de la recurrencia ciudadana frente a la revocatoria del mandato para alcaldes en los dos países
