Do you recall, or have you been told of the times when there were local police officers, high profile, walking the beat, stopping, speaking to people, visiting schools, attending local events and functions. A time, when all residents knew their officers. If they telephoned or visited their police station it was open twenty four hours, a police officer was always available to speak personally with them. It was a time when police officers were expected to devote the whole of their time to the service. This book commences during the 1960s. The main Character Constable Jim Booker, is gifted with collar number 999, a potent number for any police officer, it being the free of charge emergency contact telephone number for the UK emergency services. The story reveals the background, training, conditions of service and life generally in any police station for the everyday officer and the ordinary man and woman, and children who formed any community. The so many varied incidents that occurred in the life of the ordinary British police officer but also in the community. It was a time when the sight of a police officer walking the streets in uniform was commonplace. A time when it was expected that all police officers had personal contact with local residents and they, with the police. The attending of schools, advising pupils as to keeping safe, road crossing patrols, delivering messages, the checking of lock up property, even visiting the homes of those on holiday to ensure all was safe. On the retirement of officers it was often mentioned that their local knowledge would be sadly missed. This book covers a wide variety of incidents, including traffic and other accidents, minor crimes and a variety of other offences and diseases of animal legislation. The disputes, the drunkenness and associated violence, reports of death, natural and others. Through the years things have changed and this book reflects those changes. You are invited to enter the world of Police Constable 999. This book contains local slang and phrases which should not be confused with grammatical errors.

Hi, I am Jim Booker, prior to being promoted to sergeant; I had been a police constable in the Somerton Constabulary for over ten years. When I joined aged nineteen in 1964, I was gifted with the collar or police number of `999`.It has a "ring," to it, if I might be forgiven for using the, "pun." It is the free emergency telephone number in the UK for members of the public to contact the emergency services, police, fire or ambulance. You may have heard of me before, that is if you have read my first book, Police Constable 999. It tells the story of the every day constables or coppers, as we are called. We have many, more names, some I dare not mention, though others do, frequently, especially on the streets. I recall one youth I arrested for stealing a cancer collection box saying, "All coppers are Bastards." My answer to him was, "Whereas all coppers may be bastards, it is not all bastards that are coppers. You are nicked for stealing this donation box, keep still or the handcuffs will pinch your wrists." I have been stationed in the towns of Ashton and Blackchurch, as an ordinary copper, on the beat in the town. I also spent some time as a rural "Bobby" on twenty four hour call.I have lived in various lodgings, normally with an elderly window only too pleased to have a police helmet and tunic hanging in the hall when she opened the door to strangers. When in the rural area, I lived in a police house situated in the village of Preston with an office attached. My mode of transport was a motorcycle, it was to cost me to have a metal knee later in life after some driver dropped his cigarette bent down to pick it up, then look up seeing the parked car in front, chose to avoid it and hit me on my bike With the closure of many country police stations I was transferred to Blackchurch town working three shifts, early turn, afternoon shift and night duty.If the truth were told it is not always prudent or wise to tell us so, but no-one really likes the police, trusts them and certainly has no wish to make close friends. Despite this, I have always found that many people are fascinated with us, how we tick. What we do, what life is likewithin the police station and in our private lives.Constable 999 being so popular I feel obliged to share my experiences later in my service. This book tells the story of the life of a British Police Sergeant, known as the "Watch Commander."It is set in a time when local police officers, including occasionally, some sergeants and rarely an inspector were still high profile, walking the beat, stopping, speaking to the public and business community. A time when visiting schools, attending local events and functions was a regular feature of officer's duties. A time when all local folk knew their local police officers and if they telephoned or visited their police station it was open twenty four hours, a police officer was always available to speak personally with them.Within the service and unseen by the public, it was always the Sergeant's fault, so the old police saying went. Senior officers used the sergeant to pass on and invoke their instructions, many distasteful, even petty to the rank and file constable, whilst themselves falling back on the phrase, "take it up with the sergeant." By doing so they hoped to continue to curry favour with officers of all ranks and the public. The everyday constables took out their displeasure upon the one who had verbally given them the order or change of policy. The Sergeant in fact was like a sandwich with pressure from above and below. This book gives an insight into the everyday duties of a typical police sergeant. It relates a wide variety of incidents, domestic disputes, the drunkenness and associated violence, petty and other crimes, reports of death, natural and others. Through the years things have changed and this book reflects those changes.

Russ Reiker was a seasoned street cop in Phoenix, Arizona for 21 years. Two months before his planned retirement he was traumatically injured while on duty. He should not have survived, but he did. Chronicling his career with many extraordinary and remarkable incidents, this story culminates with the intensely personal moments preceding and during his impending death - memories that have, until now, been shared with only a few very special people. Russ Reikers tragic story is closely mirrored throughout by the circumstances leading to the death of one of his closest friends, and fellow officer. During the worst shoot-out in the history of the Phoenix Police Department, he was killed on almost the same date and time of day Russ career would end. Their close friendship is the subject of continual laughs, tears, anger, fear and, at times, outrage, but more often humility and pride. Forever changed by the funeral of his friend, Russ Reiker could never go back to being the cop he was.

In this gripping new non-fiction novel from Catherine Marfino-Reiker, author of 999 Officer Down, a veteran police officer is driven to the brink of mental collapse. J U S T O N E S H I F T delves deep into the mind of a big city street cop as he confronts one impossible situation after another during the busiest shift of his career. An intense recounting, which discloses the officers thought process as he makes repetitive, split-second, life and death decisions that have life-long effects on the people involved. This candid summation of a ten-hour evening shift takes him from the totally ridiculous and laughable to the intensely outrageous and, at times, even gruesome. The senseless murder of a young girl pushes him beyond his emotional limits. He begins to question his own abilities, and regresses to memories of a period 10 years earlier. When he finally believes he can regain his sanity, another explosive incident occurs, thrusting him to a level of uncontrollable exhaustion. These heart-warming and tragic moments will generate feelings of sympathy and compassion never before associated with a law enforcement officer.
