Herein are classic folklore selections from a large collection made by A. J. Glinski in 1862. These fairy tales come from a far and distant past and may even date from primitive Aryan times. They represent the folklore current among the peasantry of the Eastern provinces of Poland, and also in those provinces formerly known as White Russia. In this 148 page volume, with 19 exquisite and beautiful colour plates by Cecile Walton, you will find the stories of: The Frog Princess, Princess Miranda And Prince Hero, The Eagles, The Whirlwind, The Good Ferryman And The Water Nymphs, The Princess Of The Brazen Mountain and The Bear In The Forest Hut. Poland is on the little known “Amber Road”, a trade route that extends from St Petersburg, on the Baltic Sea and goes South through Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia to Italy on the Mediterranean Sea. As such it is not surprising to find these six exquisite tales embedded in Polish folklore. In olden days not only were goods and amber traded but so were stories and tales. Fairy tales were originally told to teach the young the lessons of life. In olden times it was often necessary to teach that good people had to make a stand against evil, or else evil would rule. Sometimes this meant following a path that paralleled that of the forces of evil – and this had to be learned at a young age. In these tales the defeat of the evil protagonist is always guaranteed. Fairy tales continue to be popular and continue to be used to teach these lessons, for it would seem that the forces of evil have not yet learned from history that Good always wins! This beautifully-illustrated edition of A. J. Glinksi's classic tales provides a marvelous glimpse into the world of Polish legend and folklore-and reveals its closeness and affinity to the greater European family of nations. Glinksi, Poland's master folklore writer, and his nation's equivalent of the Brothers Grimm, spent many years in the mid-nineteenth century travelling all over his nation's lands, listening to and writing down the stories as told to him by the ordinary folk. In this manner, he captured Polish folklore as it truly was-the way that the peasants would tell their children as part of a wide-ranging oral tradition. Bound up in history, legend, moral virtues, and ancient European culture, these classic stories were introduced to the English-speaking world early in the twentieth century. They were an instant hit, with tales such as the Frog Princess, Princess Miranda and Prince Hero, and many others quickly winning their place in the great classic tales of European literature. From the introduction by Maude Ashurst Biggs: These are selections from a large collection made by A. J. Glinski, printed at Wilna in 1862. These fairy tales come from a far past and may even date from primitive Aryan times. They represent the folklore current among the peasantry of the Eastern provinces of Poland, and also in those provinces usually known as White Russia. The obvious likenesses between these and the folklore of Germany, the Celtic nations, or to the Indian fairy tales, will strike every reader. This new edition has been completely reset, and includes digital reproductions of all the original illustrations. Table of contents: The Frog Princess Princess Miranda and Prince Hero The Eagles The Whirlwind The Good Ferryman and the Water Nymphs The Princess of the Brazen Mountain The Bear in the Forest Hut Appendix

Polish Folklore And Myth written by Alice Wadowski-Bak and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Fiction categories.

Edited by Joanne Asala, the stories are vividly and dramatically interpreted and portrayed in the paper-cuts (wycinaki) by Alice Wadowski-Bak, noted paper-cut and folkore artist.¶The work of Alice Wadowski-Bak, native of Niagara Falls, New York, is found in private collections and galleries worldwide. The art of wycinanki appeared in Poland in the middle of the 1800s, especially in rural areas where sheep shears were readily available. The method of folding, layering, coloring, and overlay is related to the ancient Chinese art of the block print. Artist Wadowski-Bak explores both wycinanki and oriental stencil cutting. Her origianl designs for this book attest to her exquisite artistry.¶This is a treasure of folk art and lore. A very special gift for personal collections. This book of engaging folk stories includes such tales as "The Violin," "The Headache Cure," "Midsummer's Eve," "The Flower Queen's Daughter," "The Legend of the North Wind," "The Flaming Castle," "The Village Dance," and "The Unfinished Tune."The stories were collected by Joanne Asala, with wycinanki (paper-cutting) illustrations by Polish-American artist Alice Wadowski-Bak.
