Peddlers of Error - A Story of Political Correctness, Liberalism and Rights provides a brief history of political correctness, along with various definitions of it, ranging from it being a benign attempt to prevent offense and discrimination, to stronger views associating it with utilitarianism and collectivism. The book focuses on the moral foundations that political correctness draws on, where it fits into the broad political spectrum, what wider implications it has for society, and what sort of justice it produces. A history of liberal rights is introduced in order to set a framework to determine what authority people and governments have to censor others' expression. Different philosophical views on the limits of free speech are discussed, and arguments for and against hate speech are analysed and related to political correctness. Political correctness on university campuses is covered, along with anti-discrimination legislation and campus speech codes. In addition, the 2015 and 2016 South African university protests involving white privilege, university fees and sexual offense are explored and related to political correctness. South Africa's unique brand of political correctness is studied, along with Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), affirmative action, colonialism and white guilt.Peddlers of Error examines the role of political correctness in censoring humour, focusing in particular on the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad which ultimately led to the terror attack on the Charlie Hebdo media offices in Paris. The psychology behind intolerance is discussed, as well as the conflict between truth and tolerance, which is central to the political correctness or "PC" debate. An argument is made, largely by means of examples, that political correctness is not merely socially enforced (through exclusion, strange looks, etc.) but that it has become legally enforced through speech codes, revised harassment legislation and hate speech laws. This is essentially where political correctness gets its "teeth" from - the power to censor, name, shame and punish. Political correctness is identified as being a distinct form of corrective justice which has developed in modern democracies - a new strain of justice which deviates from the social contract and from traditional liberal values.

It's time to fight back. Each day, more South Africans are targeted, labelled, and hounded out of society for expressing their opinions - ordinary opinions that just a few years ago were accepted as rational common sense. Have you been "cancelled" by an online mob that won't stop harassing you until you're fired from your job? Helen Zille almost was - but she survived by fighting back. In #StayWoke: Go Broke, the bestselling author and defining South African political figure explains why the woke Left constitutes a greater threat to South Africa's future than the populist Right does. Now more than ever, liberals must strengthen their spines and fight for their values - or be eviscerated in the Culture Wars raging across the English-speaking world. If you're looking for an incisive, indispensable survival guide through this tumultuous period of South African history, then #StayWoke: Go Broke is for you. Buy it now.

What will it take to turn South Africa around? In this insightful and provocative book, Frans Rautenbach proposes a complete overhaul of policy thinking, and provides fresh arguments that effectively address South Africa’s unemployment, race problems and lack of education. Rautenbach examines the fundamental problem of rent-seeking, to which he proposes two antidotes: the free market and decentralisation of government. Along the way he tackles holy cows such as affirmative action, trade unions, labour law and welfare payments. He also addresses contentious topics such as racism, white privilege, political correctness, state funding of higher education and mounting evidence that trade unions substantially suppress employment growth. Written by a labour lawyer with a proven track record in a range of policy issues, South Africa Can Work speaks effectively to a cross-section of readers of all disciplines, and brings sorely needed good news.

Political Correctness “Geoffrey Hughes has brought together with great panache the very many manifestations of political correctness, both absurd and vicious, and shown how they express a single collective mind-set. His book establishes beyond doubt that there is such a phenomenon, that it has become dominant in our culture, and that it represents a growing tendency to censor public debate and to prevent people from questioning orthodoxies which we all know to be false.” Roger Scruton, American Enterprise Institute “What a joy this book is! Hughes’ study traces, with unflagging zest, the modern history of PC. Sumptuous in data, in judgment precise, this is the latest and fullest of Hughes’ series on the social history of language.” Walter Nash, Professor Emeritus, University of Nottingham Political Correctness is now an everyday phrase and part of the modern mindset. Everyone thinks they know what it means, but its own meaning constantly shifts. Its surprising origins have led to it becoming integrated into contemporary culture in ways that are both idealistic and ridiculous. Originally grounded in respect for difference and sensitivity to suffering, it has often become a distraction and even a silencer of genuine issues, provoking satire and parody. In this carefully researched, thought-provoking book, Geoffrey Hughes examines the trajectory of political correctness and its impact on public life. Exploring the origins, progress, content, and style of PC, Hughes’ journey leads us through authors as diverse as Chaucer, Shakespeare and Swift; Philip Larkin, David Mamet, and J.M. Coetzee; from nursery rhymes to Spike Lee films. Focusing on the historical, semantic, and cultural aspects of political correctness, this outstanding and unique work will intrigue anyone interested in this ongoing debate.

In this collection, some of South Africa's most distinguished historians and social scientists present their views on the importance of history and heritage for the transformation of the South African society. Although popular use of history helped remove apartheid, the study of history lost status during the transition process. Some of the reasons for this, like the nature of the negotiated revolution, social demobilization, and individualization, are analyzed in this book. The combination of scholarly work with an active role in changing society has been a central concern in South African history writing. This book warns against the danger of history being caught between reconciliation, commercialization, and political correctness. Some of the articles critically examine the role of historians in ideological debates on gender, African agency, Afrikaner anti-communism, early South African socialism, and the role of the business world during late apartheid. Other contributions explore continuing controversies on the politics of public history in post-apartheid South Africa, describe the implementation of new policies for history education, or investigate the use of applied history in the land restitution process and in the TRC. The authors also examine a range of new government and private initiatives in the practical use of history, including the establishment of new historical entertainment parks and the conversion of museums and heritage sites. For readers interested in nation building processes and identity politics, this book provides valuable insight.
