Just in time for the coming elections, this book shows how political parties, interest groups, and elections have become totally interdependent in the era of candidate-centered politics, issue advocacy organizations, and media-driven campaigns. With up-to-date data through the mid-term elections of 2006, this book looks ahead to 2008 in illustrating such important developments as the increasing polarization of party politics, the effects of campaign finance reform, the rise of the 527s in campaign advertising, the K Street lobbying phenomenon, and new media and movements across the political spectrum. An essential resource for political junkies, this book provides one-stop shopping for understanding the combined impact of three major institutions on the future of American politics.

Non Party Actors In Electoral Politics written by David M. Farrell and has been published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Political Science categories.

The contemporary electoral process is, in many ways, far more complex than it used to be. This book focuses on the growing involvement of non-party actors in the process of selecting candidates, as well as involvement during the campaign itself. These actors - interest groups, individual citizens, even certain political institutions - operate in the campaign environment independently of the parties and their candidates. They are not seeking to attain public office, nevertheless they interfere in the electoral process in growing numbers and with increasing intensity. For the most part, they seek to influence electoral outcomes to their advantage, and yet on occasions for less selfish reasons such as increasing the quality of the electoral process itself. Encompassing a broad range of countries - including several old democracies (the US, Germany, Britain, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Israel, and others) and one new democracy (Romania) - and combining extensive surveys with detailed case studies of recent elections, the chapters in this volume take stock of this new feature in the contemporary electoral process, along with its origins, forms, and consequences.

Political Parties And The Winning Of Office written by Joseph A. Schlesinger and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Political Science categories.

This book offers an integrated theoretical perspective for explaining political party operations. Schlesinger examines the distinctive structure of the party organization, the nature of its collective outputs, and the direct and indirect rewards it offers participants. He also develops the impact of political ambitions and the structure of political opportunities and electoral arrangements on party capabilities. Schlesinger concludes by looking at the "changing multinuclear party" and the implications of his theory for comparative research. The comparative potential of the theory is demonstrated through the construction of a typology of parties based on officeholders' age and career paths for five Western democracies. Political parties, interest groups, and candidate campaigns all pursue similar goals in presidential elections: each entity attempts to mobilize voters. However, the regulatory environment often prevents these groups from coordinating their efforts. With participants playing by new rules mandated by the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, the 2004 presidential election included previously unseen configurations and alliances between political actors. In some campaign situations, the resulting 'dance' was carefully choreographed. In others, dancers stepped on each other's toes. In still others, participants could only eye each other across the floor. Dancing without Partners intensively analyzes the relationships among candidates, political parties, and interest groups under the BCRA's new regulations in the 2004 election cycle in five battleground states. The chapters assess the ways in which the rules of the game have changed the game itself_and also how they haven't. The result is a book that will be invaluable to researchers and students of presidential elections.

Divergence in opinions, beliefs, and interests is a fundamental aspect of every society. Such plurality often spurs the development of various factions and groups, each seeking to attain its objectives through political and governmental action. Whereas elected officials exercise political power directly, interest groups often operate behind the scenes, lobbying for policy changes that benefit their cause. Readers discover how the general populace influences the way it is governed via political parties, interest groups, and elections within the framework of various forms of government.

Political advertising plays a key role in modern electioneering and has formed part of political campaigns since the earliest federal elections were held in the United States. As modes of mass communication have evolved, so have the venues for campaign advertising—from newspapers to radio and television, and today, the Internet. Not only have the outlets for political advertising expanded over the past twenty years, so have the number of groups using it to convey information and advance their points of view. Because political advertising has become such a pervasive medium for candidates, political parties, and special interest groups, understanding its role in election campaigns becomes all the more important. Crowded Airwaves gathers some of the most significant new work in American political advertising and communication. The contributors provide an objective and balanced analysis of political advertising: its causes, its growth, and its consequences on elections in the United States. The chapters in this volume tackle three of the most interesting and most complicated issues in political advertising today: the characterization of ads and the need to measure their impact; the agenda-setting and priming effects of ads; and the role and implications of issue advertising for the electorate. The contributors focus in particular on the effects and consequences of negative advertising. Crowded Airwaves will appeal to readers who are interested in political campaigns and communication. It will be of special importance to those concerned with the tone and content of electoral campaigns and political discourse.
