Il volume prende le mosse dalla raccolta e selezione dei contributi presentati in occasione dell’undicesima edizione della Scuola estiva nazionale di Sviluppo Locale “Sebastiano Brusco”, tenutasi a Seneghe, nel cuore della Sardegna, dal 13 al 15 luglio 2017, e ne riprende il titolo e il focus tematico, “Territori in movimento. Esperienza LEADER e Progetti Pilota per le Aree Interne”. I quattordici saggi che lo compongono danno vita a una riflessione a più voci sulle strategie di rigenerazione delle aree interne italiane, superando una narrazione a lungo dominante che ha teso a ridurle a un’informe sommatoria di territori marginalizzati, spopolati e connotati in senso residuale: “tutto ciò che resta” una volta tolte le zone costiere, le pianure fertili, le città. Viceversa, il volume si propone di dare conto dell’universo variegato di sistemi territoriali interni che costituiscono l’ossatura di lungo periodo del Paese e che si sono spesso rivelati più resistenti e resilienti dei territori urbanizzati di fronte alle recenti crisi produttive e occupazionali, conservando maggiormente i propri caratteri e peculiari stili di vita, e caratterizzandosi per percorsi di sviluppo fortemente radicati nei rispettivi contesti, come laboratori nei quali sperimentare una possibile alternativa strategica per la ripresa del Paese. Una visione a “campo lungo”, tra reti lunghe e corte dell’economia, al contempo rivelatrice delle dinamiche attivate “dai margini” e prospettica rispetto agli orientamenti di policy place-based, che proprio al cuore di un’Italia tutt’altro che minore si rivolgono crescentemente.

Today, it is recognized as the ultimate volume of Hirschman's groundbreaking trilogy on development, and as the bridge to the broader social science themes of his subsequent writings. Though among his lesser-known works, this unassuming tome is one of his most influential. It is in this book that Hirschman first shared his now famous "Principle of the Hiding Hand."
