Scientific Essay from the year 2014 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: University, Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-ouzou (Department of English), language: English, abstract: This article seeks to analyse Samuel Butler's satirical treatment of Victorian institutions and values in Erewhon (1872). It focuses on the function of the utopian genre to account for the ideological struggles that inform society, and its capacity to suggest cures to social ills. Taking its theoretical bearings from Paul Ricoeur's Lectures on Ideology and Utopia (1975) and Karl Mannheim's Ideology and Utopia: A Sociology of Knowledge (1932) it attempts to explain why Butler faces the difficulty of reflecting objectively on a society in which he was culturally immersed; In describing this difficulty, Ricoeur uses the expression "Mannheim's paradox" to refer to the ambivalent intersection of ideology and utopia in utopian thinking. A symptom of this ambivalence in Erewhon, as we argue in this article, is the resort to satire not only to mock and make a clean sweep of the values of Victorian society in compliance with the work's utopian impulse but to re-establish those same values on firmer ideological basis by resorting to carnivalisation.

Ecological Form brings together leading voices in nineteenth-century ecocriticism to suture the lingering divide between postcolonial and ecocritical approaches. Together, these essays show how Victorian thinkers used aesthetic form to engage problems of system, interconnection, and dispossession that remain our own. The authors reconsider Victorian literary structures in light of environmental catastrophe; coordinate “natural” questions with sociopolitical ones; and underscore the category of form as a means for generating environmental—and therefore political—knowledge. Moving from the elegy and the industrial novel to the utopian romance, the scientific treatise, and beyond, Ecological Form demonstrates how nineteenth-century thinkers conceptualized the circuits of extraction and violence linking Britain to its global network. Yet the book’s most pressing argument is that this past thought can be a resource for reimagining the present.

Essays And Aphorisms written by Arthur Schopenhauer and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-26 with Philosophy categories.

One of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth century, Schopenhauer (1788-1860) believed that human action is determined not by reason but by 'will' - the blind and irrational desire for physical existence. This selection of his writings on religion, ethics, politics, women, suicide, books and many other themes is taken from Schopenhauer's last work, Parerga and Paralipomena, which he published in 1851. These pieces depict humanity as locked in a struggle beyond good and evil, and each individual absolutely free within a Godless world, in which art, morality and self-awareness are our only salvation. This innovative - and pessimistic - view has proved powerfully influential upon philosophy and art, directly affecting the work of Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and Wagner among others.

Taxation in Utopia explores utopian political philosophy from the neglected perspective of taxation. At its core, taxation is an ethical question. It requires people to sacrifice for the benefit of others, whether or not they also benefit themselves. Donald Morris refers to this broader, nonmonetary context as constructive taxation, which includes restrictions on privacy and access to information, constraints on marriage and child-rearing, and conventions restricting the proprietorship of land. Morris examines this in the context of various utopian writings, such as More's Utopia, as well as literary treatments of these issues, such as Bellamy's Looking Backward. This interdisciplinary exploration of utopian taxation provides a novel approach to examining relations between a state's view of the general welfare and the sacrifices this view requires of its citizens.

Flamboyant, theatrical and ambitious, Margaret Cavendish was one of the seventeenth century's most striking figures: a woman who ventured into the male spheres of politics, science, philosophy and literature. The Blazing World is a highly original work: part Utopian fiction, part feminist text, it tells of a lady shipwrecked on the Blazing World where she is made Empress and uses her power to ensure that it is free of war, religious division and unfair sexual discrimination. This volume also includes The Contract, a romance in which love and law work harmoniously together, and Assaulted and Pursued Chastity, which explores the power and freedom a woman can achieve in the disguise of a man.

The essays offer a wide scope of aspects such as the Industrial Revolution, religion and secularisation, science, technology, medicine, evolution or the increasing mediatisation of the lifeworld. Part II, then, leads through the work of more than 25 eminent Victorian novelists. Each of these chapters provides both historical and biographical contextualisation, overview, close reading and analysis. They also encourage further research as they look upon the work of the respective authors at issue from the perspectives of cultural and literary theory.

"The Fair Haven" by Samuel Butler is a completely unique and satirical paintings that delves into non secular and theological themes, offered in the form of a dialogue. Published anonymously, the book explores Butler's skepticism towards traditional religious beliefs and his critique of the inconsistencies observed in Christian doctrine. The narrative unfolds as a communication between characters, Smith and Brown, who discuss subjects related to religion, morality, and the nature of God. Brown represents a religious believer, whilst Smith adopts a extra skeptical and rational attitude. Through their talk, Butler engages in a witty and regularly humorous exam of spiritual dogma, tough the traditional tenets of Christianity. One of the wonderful elements of "The Fair Haven" is its unconventional approach to theological discourse. By adopting a satirical and dialogic format, Butler offers readers with a concept-scary exploration of religious thoughts, inviting them to impeach and rethink their personal beliefs. The book displays Butler's broader intellectual pastimes, which include his fascination with evolution and the connection among technology and religion. While preserving a funny tone, Butler addresses severe theological questions, making "The Fair Haven" a concept-upsetting and unconventional contribution to the discussions of faith and reason within the past due 19th century.

Several of the writers discussed (Mary Shelley, Poe, Verne, Wells) have been proposed by literary historians as the founders of science fiction. The aim in these essays, however, is not to privilege one individual, but rather to look at the gradual convergence of a number of different genres and at the process of continuing influence of one writer on his/her successor.
