Malevich's attitudes towards provincial life changed from horrified disdain to awed fascination and finally disappointment that his own cultural program was overturned by others. Vitebsk was geographically and culturally remote from the Moscow Malevich knew. It was a city of approximately 100,000, west of Moscow in the former Pale of Settlement, that area of the empire where most Jews were required to live. Vitebsk was still a Jewish city even after the Bolsheviks lifted those residence restrictions. The Jewishness of Vitebsk influenced Malevich's reformulation of his cultural program. Malevich's shift towards utilitarianism is, at least in part, inspired by his desire to create a cultural program that had an impact on the lived experience of Vitebsk. The provincial town that was so inhospitable to Malevich's cultural agenda, ended up changing that agenda and becoming its ideal location.
