Die Studie ist im Zusammenhang mit dem von den Professoren Dr. Heino Kaack und Dr. Reinhold Roth geleiteten und von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Forschungsprojekt "Parteiensystem und Legitimation des politischen Systems" entstanden. Sie wurde im Sommersemester 1984 vom Gemeinsamen Ausschuß der Fachbereiche an der Erziehungswissenschaftlichen Hochschule Rheinland-Pfalz als Habilitations schrift angenommen. Diverse andere Forschungsvorhaben verzögerten die Uberarbeitung bis in die zweite Hälfte des Jahres 1986. Auf diese Weise bot der Wahlkampffür die Bundestagswal1l1987 erneut zahlreiche Anschauungsbeispiele für die Fähigkeit politischer Akteure, symbolische Politik zu betreiben. Auch wenn sich die Themen, die personellen und parteipolitischen Konstellationen von denen des Bundestagswahljahres 1980 auf den sich der empirische Teil der Studie bezieht, erheblich unterschieden, so zeigten doch die kommunikativen Auseinander seztungen, daß die analysierten zentralen Merkmale politischer Symbolik und die Strategien symbolischer Politik relativ situationsunabhängig sind und größtenteils auch in anderen zeitlichen Kontexten Gültigkeit haben. Zwar verantwortet der Autor den Inhalt der Studie selbstverständlich allein. Es ist jedoch mehr als die Wahrnehmung eines akademischen Brauchs, an dieser Stelle einer Reihe von Personen, die in unterschiedlicher Weise am Fortgang der Arbeit Anteil hatten, Dank zu sagen. Herr Prof. Dr. Heino Kaack hat die Studie nicht nur mit initiiert und durch vielfältige kritische Anregungen begleitet, sondern auch durch den zeitlichen Spielraum, den er mir als seinem langjährigen Mitarbeiter gelassen hat, gefördert. Meinen Kollegen, vor allem aber meinem Freund Dr. Edwin Czerwick, ist für die nie limitierte Bereitschaft zu Diskussion und Kritik in besonderer Weise zu danken.
