So wehrte sich die AfD gegen diese Betitelung, nachdem die Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung sie in einem Artikel als rechtspopulistisch beschrieb. Bernd Lucke, früherer Parteivorsitzender, ließ verlauten, die bpb unterläge einem Neutralitätsgebot und hätte dieses durch die Abwertung seiner Partei nicht eingehalten. Jörg Meuthen selbst - Parteivorsitzender der AfD seit Juli 2015 – antwortete auf die Frage, wie weit die AfD rechts stehe, sie seien keine Rassisten, jedoch gehöre der rechte Flügel als integraler Bestandteil zur AfD. Um analysieren zu können, ob die AfD eine rechtspopulistische oder gar rechtsextreme Partei ist, wird ein theoretischer Zugang zu den Begrifflichkeiten dargelegt. Hierfür wird zunächst der Rechtspopulismus definiert und dessen Merkmale veranschaulicht, um aufzuzeigen, in welcher Hinsicht die AfD diese erfüllt. Zurückgegriffen wird dafür besonders auf die Literatur von Decker, Hartleb und die Internetseite der AfD. Anschließend wird der Rechtspopulismus vom Rechtsextremismus abgegrenzt und die Merkmale einer rechtsextremen Partei aufgezeigt, um zu untersuchen, ob die AfD eine rechtsextreme Partei ist. Den Großteil der Arbeit stellt die Analyse der rechtspopulistischen und rechtsextremen Elemente der AfD dar.
