Excerpt from The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism Max Weber's essay, Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus, which is here translated, was first published in the Archiv fur Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik, Volumes XX and XXI, for 1904-5. It was reprinted in 1920 as the first study in the ambitious series Gesammelte Aufsatze zur Religionssoziologie, which was left unfinished by Weber's untimely death in that same year. For the new printing he made considerable changes, and appended both new material and replies to criticism in footnotes. The translation has, however, been made directly from this last edition. Though the volume of footnotes is excessively large, so as to form a serious detriment to the reader's enjoyment, it has not seemed advisable either to omit any of them or to attempt to incorporate them into the text. As it stands it shows most plainly how the problem has grown in Weber's own mind, and it would be a pity to destroy that for the sake of artistic perfection. A careful perusal of the notes is, however, especially recommended to the reader, since a great deal of important material is contained in them. The fact that they are printed separately from the main text should not be allowed to hinder their use. The translation is, as far as is possible, faithful to the text, rather than attempting to achieve any more than ordinary, clear English style. Nothing has been altered, and only a few comments to clarify obscure points and to refer the reader to related parts of Weber's work have been added. It is refreshing to find that you still believe in the validity of the prophetic teachings, and that you do not regard them as entirely displaced by the findings of modem economics, however much we may value and appreciate the corroborations and co-operations of the latter. You still find room in your teaching of peace for Isaiah - and for Jesus! Well! I think you are quite right in this, and that the method does not need much apologetic. Excerpt from The War and Theology The eflect of German thought on British theology began to be felt first in Reformation times but it was neither marked nor widespread till the middle of the nineteenth century. In the year 1857 Mark Pattison was able to write, ' It must not be supposed that German theology is some obscure national product, the concern exclusively of the country which has given it birth. It is no insulated phenomenon. Though gener ated in Germany it belongs to Christendom. It is the theological movement of the age. It is only because there is fuller intellectual life in Germany than elsewhere -only because it so happens that, at present, European speculation is transacted by Germans, as our financial afiairs are by Jews, that German characteristics are impressed on the substance of the Christian science. The capital of learning is in the hands of Germans, and theirs has been the enterprise which has directed it into theological channels.' True as this judgement is, it had men, up to that time, by no means universally accepted. Both in Liberal and orthodox circles, by Arnold as well as by Pusey, German neology was regarded with dislike and alarm. In 1825, in his preface to a translation of Schleiermacher's Critical Essay on the Gospel of St. Lake, Connop Thirlwall had written, It would almost seem as if at Oxford the knowledge of German subjected a divine.
