Das Paradigma des politischen Liberalismus hat sich nach dem Niedergang des real existierenden Sozialismus beinahe weltweit durchgesetzt. John Locke entfaltete die theoretische Grundlage dieser politischen Strömung in seinen "Zwei Abhandlungen über die Regierung", die ein Jahr nach dem Sieg der Glorious Revolution, wahrscheinlich erst zehn Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung, 1689 von ihm anonym veröffentlicht wurden. In dieser Streitschrift wendet er sich gegen traditionelle Legitimationstheorien politischer Gewalt, die den Herrschaftsanspruch eines absoluten Monarchen durch göttliche Einsetzung erklären. Solche Positionen sind für Locke unhaltbar, er stellte sich die Aufgabe, den "wahren Ursprung, die Reichweite und den Zweck der staatlichen Regierung" darzulegen. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, Lockes Herleitung legitimer politischer Gewalt, die in seiner Konzeption eines Staatsgründungsschemas mündet, darzustellen und die Frage zu beantworten, ob ein nach solchem Schema gegründetes Staatswesen wirklich die Unzulänglichkeiten der von ihm kritisierten absoluten Monarchie überwinden kann. Da Locke seine Legitimationstheorie systematisch entfaltet, müssen zunächst seine Prämissen aufgezeigt werden, auf denen er seine Argumentation aufbaut, denn sie beschreiben den Inhalt dessen, was er mit politischer Gewalt zu vereinbaren sucht. Diese Prämissen äußert er in seinen Ausführungen über den Naturzustand, dessen Umrisse darzustellen sind. Max Weber (1864-1920) is recognized throughout the world as the most important classic thinker in the social sciences – there is simply no one in the history of the social sciences who has been more influential. Over the last decade the "transition paradigm", which is based on the conviction that authoritarian political systems would over time necessarily develop into democracies, has been subjected to serious criticism. The complex political and societal developments in the post-Soviet region in particular have exposed flaws in the claim that a shift from authoritarianism to democracy is inevitable. Using case studies from the post-Soviet region, a broad range of international contributors present an original and innovative contribution to the debate. This study traces how Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), founder of Anthroposophy and the Waldorf schools, and the sociologist Max Weber (1864-1920) confronted the societal transformations in fin-de-siècle Germany as their primary identity marker - Bildung or self-formation - began to break down. The book documents the German bourgeoisie's failure to modernise as an «imagined community», shedding new light on the larger question about the interrelationship of science, religion and culture by situating Weber's and Steiner's work into the broader context of the sociocultural and sociopolitical transformations during which it was created. Moreover, by exploring the influences across disciplines in a historical context the book provides insight into the cultural implications of new social science and religion at the beginning of the twentieth century.
