Der Umbruch der Jahre 1988/89 aus der Perspektive von Jugendlichen: DDR und Polen. Der Umbruch von 1988/89 wird überwiegend aus der Perspektive der Älteren, der Führungsfiguren der ostdeutschen Bürgerbewegung oder der »Solidarność", erzählt. Doch es bildete sich auch eine »junge Opposition", die Ende der 80er Jahre einen politischen Wandel anstrebte und die sich von »den Alten" abgrenzte, um ihre eigenen, jugendspezifischen Gruppen aufzubauen. Diese Studie vergleicht die politische Jugend aus einer doppelten Perspektive - sowohl aus ihren Selbstbeschreibungen in den achtziger Jahren als auch ex post. In beiden Ländern verwiesen die jungen Aktivisten auf den Mythos »Jugend" als gesellschaftsverändernde Kraft. In erinnerungskulturellen Debatten nehmen sie eine unterschiedliche Bedeutung ein. In der Volksrepublik Polen spielte die »junge Opposition" eine wesentliche Rolle in den Streiks von 1988. Sie spricht von sich auch heute noch als »Generation des Umbruchs" und wird als solche diskutiert. Dagegen haben die Mitglieder der ostdeutschen neuen Jugendvereinigungen noch kein vergleichbares mediales Narrativ aufbauen können.

How do political regimes respond to the challenges emanating from youth mobilization? This book seeks to understand regime resilience and breakdown by analysing the public meaning of youth, as well as the physical mobilization of young people. Mobilization carried by young people is a key component in understanding the stabilisation of the authoritarian regime structures in contemporary Russia, but the Russian experience makes only sense if placed in its broader historical context.Three comparative cases, the breakdown of the authoritarian Soviet Union, the breakdown of the democratic Weimar Republic, and the crisis of the democratic regime in France around 1968 highlight how regimes which lacked popular support have compensated for their insufficient legitimacy by trying to mobilize youth symbolically and politically. This book illustrates the symbolic significance of youth and its role in regime crisis by analysing a new data set of newspaper articles with a new method of discourse analysis. The combination of qualitative interpretation and quantitative network analysis enables a deeper and more systematic understanding of discursive structures about youth. Through this methodological innovation the book contributes to the way we define the categories of youth, generation, and crisis. It makes the case that our conceptualisation should reflect the way terms are being used - usages that can be captured in a systematic way with new methods of discourse analysis. Oxford Studies in Democratization is a series for scholars and students of comparative politics and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on the comparative study of the democratization process that accompanied the decline and termination of the cold war. For a long time agriculture and rural life were dismissed by many contemporaries as irrelevant or old-fashioned. Contrasted with cities as centers of intellectual debate and political decision-making, the countryside seemed to be becoming increasingly irrelevant. Today, politicians in many European countries are starting to understand that the neglect of the countryside has created grave problems. Similarly, historians are remembering that European history in the twentieth century was strongly influenced by problems connected to the production of food, access to natural resources, land rights, and the political representation and activism of rural populations. Hence, the handbook offers an overview of historical knowledge on a variety of topics related to the land. It does so through a distinctly activity-centric and genuinely European perspective. Rather than comparing different national approaches to living with the land, the different chapters focus on particular activities – from measuring to settling the land, from producing and selling food to improving agronomic knowledge, from organizing rural life to challenging political structures in the countryside. Furthermore, the handbook overcomes the traditional division between East and West, North and South, by embracing a transregional approach that allows readers to gain an understanding of similarities and differences across national and ideological borders in twentieth-century Europe.

In regard to integration, cultural and political endeavors, the "Deutsche Jugend des Ostens" (DJO) developed extensive concepts to claim its space within post-war Germany. Reaching out to young sympathizers, the DJO fostered the acquisition of cultural, social, and economic capital among the displaced youth. Over the course of its history, the organization's internal decisions, negotiations, and directives have been vividly reflecting the ties and tensions between the parent generation's values on the one hand and the search for autonomous identity and societal change among the displaced youth on the other.
