Trotz intensiver Erforschung der attischen Demokratie des 4. Jh. v. Chr. hat man sich mit den politischen Reflexionen der Athener und ihrer Bedeutung fur die Identitatsbildung und soziale Sinnstiftung bislang kaum auseinandergesetzt. Vorliegende interdisziplinar angelegte Studie mochte diese Lucke schliessen. Sie untersucht systematisch die Vorstellungen der Athener uber ihre eigene politische Ordnung und interpretiert sie im politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Kontext. Dazu werden zwei zentrale soziale Diskurse der Zeit in den Blick genommen: der philosophische am Beispiel der politischen Philosophie des Aristoteles und der rhetorische anhand samtlicher uberlieferter Reden der attischen Rhetoren des 4. Jh. Die beiden Diskurse werden zunachst einzeln im Hinblick auf ihre Auseinandersetzung mit der politischen Wirklichkeit untersucht, danach verglichen und schliesslich zur politischen Praxis in Beziehung gesetzt.

Athenians in the classical period (508–322 BC) were drawn to an image of themselves as a compassionate and generous people who rushed to the aid of others in distress, both at home and abroad. What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior? This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support, and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. If the obligation of Athenians to help fellow citizens was fairly tenuous, all the more so was their responsibility to intervene to assist the peoples of other states; a distinct pragmatism prevailed in the city's decisions concerning intervention abroad.

This book focuses on the reception of classical political ideas in the political thought of the fourteenth-century Italian writer Marsilius of Padua. Vasileios Syros provides a novel cross-cultural perspective on Marsilius’s theory and breaks fresh ground by exploring linkages between his ideas and the medieval Muslim, Jewish, and Byzantine traditions. Syros investigates Marsilius’s application of medical metaphors in his discussion of the causes of civil strife and the desirable political organization.
