Der Kalte Krieg im Nachkriegsberlin war eine Hochzeit des politischen Journalismus. Unter alliierter Kontrolle entstanden zahlreiche Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, die Aufbruch, Orientierung und Demokratie versprachen. Im "Zeitungsparadies Berlin" kämpften Journalisten mit allen Regeln der Kunst um die Gesinnung der Bevölkerung. Ob Zwangsvereinigung, Berlin-Blockade oder 17. Juni 1953: Immer wieder avancierten die Presseorgane zu publizistischen Waffen im interalliierten Kampf um die Machtverteilung in Berlin. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung beschreibt und analysiert der Historiker und Publizist Christoph Marx anschaulich die besondere Nachkriegsentwicklung der Berliner Presselandschaft anhand der wichtigsten Zeitungen und Medienmacher. Redaktionelle Besonderheiten werden genauso wie alliierte Pressestrategien herausgearbeitet. Im Zentrum stehen der amerikanisch lizenzierte „Tagesspiegel“ und die sowjetisch lizenzierte "Berliner Zeitung". Anhand tagespolitischer Auseinandersetzungen stellt Marx exemplarisch dar, mit welchen Mitteln die Zeitungen für ihre Ziele kämpften. Dabei nimmt er auch die bedeutendsten Journalisten auf beiden Seiten in einer politischen Doppelbiografie in den gemeinsamen Blick: Erik Reger, Kopf des „Tagesspiegel“, und Rudolf Herrnstadt, Herr eines kommunistischen Pressekonzerns in Ost-Berlin. Es wird deutlich, dass beide als intellektuelle Idealisten trotz ihrer ideologischen Feindschaft einander durchaus glichen. Eine jeweils bemerkenswerte Symbiose von Geist und Macht – die nach dem Aufstand vom 17. Juni 1953 aus ganz unterschiedlichen Gründen ein abruptes Ende fand. Eine vielschichtige Studie, die durch die innovative Verzahnung von struktureller und biografischer Analyse für Historiker, Publizisten und Politologen gleichermaßen interessant ist, und nicht zuletzt ein spannender Rückblick auf eine Zeit, als politischer Journalismus pädagogische Ansprüche hatte und Weltpolitik begleitete, wenn nicht sogar mitschrieb.

Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges kämpfte die Familie Ullstein um die Rückgabe ihres 1934 an die NSDAP zwangsverkauften Verlags. Doch die Amerikaner brauchten das Druckhaus des Unternehmens in Berlin-Tempelhof für ihre Reeducation-Politik und verzögerten jahrelang die Restitution – genau wie der Berliner Senat, der mit dem Wiederaufleben des legendären Hauses Ullstein einen Zeitungskrieg in West-Berlin befürchtete. Als die Ullsteins 1952 ihren Verlag aus der Treuhänderschaft zurückerhielten, war er überschuldet, sein Maschinenpark veraltet – und man versuchte, ihm die lebenswichtigen Zeitungslizenzen vorzuenthalten. Aufgrund dieser mannigfaltig belasteten Ausgangssituation erscheint das wirtschaftliche Versagen der wiedererstandenen Ullstein AG am Ende der 1950er Jahre in einem anderen Licht. Das Unrecht, das den Ullsteins unter dem NS-Regime widerfahren war, wirkte nach dem Untergang fort – und erhielt durch die bewusst verzögerte Restitution neue und verstörende Facetten.
