Der Existentialismus findet wenig Beachtung in der politischen Philosophie, der er als unpolitisch, romantisch, pubertar, obszon gilt. Zurecht beschuldigt man ihn des Individualismus. Denn der Existentialismus geht von einem Primat des Individuums gegenuber dem Staat aus, was sich keinem Vertrag, sondern originar der individuellen Widerstandigkeit verdankt. Daraus entsteht politische Macht, wahrend undemokratische Staaten darauf zumeist mit Gewalt reagieren. So entwickelt sich ein hochaktuelles Staatsverstandnis, wie es sich als partizipatorische Demokratie im spaten 20. Jahrhunderts verbreitet. Dieses Staatsverstandnis vertreten vor allem die franzosischen emanzipatorischen Existentialisten, findet sich aber auch bei Randgangern wie Arendt und Bataille und kann sich auf Wegbereiter wie Kierkegaard und Stirner sowie Nietzsche berufen. Ein metaphysisch religioser Existentialismus von Marcel, Jaspers, Cioran oder am Rande Heidegger und als Vorlaufer Bergson insistiert auf einem traditionellen Staatsverstandnis, das lebens- oder seinsphilosophisch renoviert wird. Der Band fuhrt vor, dass die Nachwirkungen des verfemten Existentialismus politischer sind, als dessen sparliche, teilweise fragwurdige Rezeption heute glauben machen mochte.

Drawing on previously unexplored sources, Kerry H. Whiteside presents the political theory of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961), one of France's best-known twentieth-century philosophers. Whiteside argues that Merleau-Ponty's objective in his political writings was to make existentialism into the foundation for a philosophically consistent mode of political thinking. This study discusses the inadequacies Merleau-Ponty found in the traditional philosophies of empiricism and idealism, and then examines the subject-object dualism that he believed deprived previous forms of existentialism of political significance. Whiteside shows how Merleau-Ponty overcame these problems by grounding political reasoning in a theory of consciousness that emphasized both its individuality and its need for socially created meaning. After explaining Merleau-Ponty's modifications of the views of Sartre, Aron, and others, the book investigates how he applied his political theory in editorial exchanges with Communists and liberals. There are perpetual debates about the extent of freedom in politics. Are we free to choose? Are we overdetermined by our material conditions? Some hybrid between the two? What is more, how are we to comprehend ourselves as creators of history if freedom itself is a problematic concept? And what would it mean if self-comprehension were foreclosed by this problematic? In this text, Austin Hayden Smidt analyzes an oft-overlooked text by Jean-Paul Sartre in order to ground a logical framework for exploring this paradox. In Critique of Dialectical Reason, Sartre sought to develop an historical and structural heuristic; one that would enable future theorists and activists alike to assess the pressing problems facing the various milieux of capitalist life. Through this heuristic, his intent was to develop an orientation enabling humans to transform their world in their perpetual creation of themselves (and vice versa). However, the stylistic difficulties of the text, as well as a general agreement among previous interpreters, has prevented the richness of the investigation from taking root. This book sets a new course, and invites further collaboration as – together – we create society as a work of art.
