Polymer Brushes Derived From Polymer Single Crystals written by Shan Mei and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Crystalline polymers categories.

Polymer brushes are polymer chains densely tethered to substrates or interfaces. Different from free polymer chains, these tethered brushes exhibit unique chain conformations and behaviors, and can be widely used for different applications due to their special properties. Traditional methods for polymer brush synthesis include "grafting-to" and "grafting-from", both with intrinsic limitations. In this dissertation, polymer single crystals (PSCs) were used as templates to synthesize polymer brushes. Polymer brushes can be obtained on single crystal surface by crystallization of block copolymers, or by coupling PSCs with functional chain ends onto a substrate. Due to the regular chain packing in PSCs and the programmable crystal growth, polymer brushes derived from PSCs can possess controllable grafting density, tethering points, and brush architectures. In this dissertation, a series of polymer brushes with various chain compositions/architectures were synthesized via the PSC-templating method. The first example is the synthesis of patterned poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) gradient brushes. The grafting density of PEO brushes was precisely tuned by co-crystallization of end dissimilar PEO polymers, and various gradient patterns were obtained by programming the PEO crystal growth. Block-copolymer brushes using poly(L-lactic acid)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PLLA-b-PEO) were synthesized by using PSCs of a triblock copolymer with a long tethering segment to obtain a high grafting efficiency. Binary poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) / polystyrene (PS) mixed brushes were synthesized using poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stereocomplex single crystals as the templates. Stereocomplex structure prevented the formation of macrophase separation of the two immiscible polymers, and resulted in a homogeneous mixing of two polymer brushes. The resulting mixed PEO/PS brushes exhibited the characteristic ripple and dimple phase structures in response to different solvents. Lastly, patterned poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) brushes on PEO single crystals were used to assemble gold nano particles (AuNPs) into free standing frame structure with precisely tunable sizes. The synthesized AuNP frames exhibited special optical property, which was observed only in gold nano rods but not AuNPs, indicating the importance of a controlled assembly structure in discovering new properties of NPs. Polymer bottle brush (BB) as a newly developed polymer architecture has attracted a lot of attention in the materials science field. Polymer bottle brushes usually have high molecular weight and a worm-like shape. Polymer bottle brushes have side chains that are closely covalently bonded to a linear polymer backbone. Because of the close packing of side chains, the backbone is extended. Polymer bottle brushes are well-defined polymers by controlling the side chains, backbone and grafting density. The study of crystallization behavior of polymer bottle brush is essential for us to gain a better knowledge of polymer bottle brush. In this thesis study, we investigated the crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene oxide) BB (PEO-BB) in dilute solution. 5K PEO side chain was used as the side chain of the polymer bottle brush(BB). The degree of polymerization of backbone is 800 and the grafting density is controlled to be 76% and 48.6%. Uniformly spherical single crystals structure have been observed in PEO-BB. Furthermore, the size of the spherical crystals increases with the increasing crystallization temperature. Single layer structure transfers into a muti-lay structure when the concentration of the solution increases. Programmable growth was also conducted in this research, using different size of 300Klinear PEO single crystals as the seeds in the solution. A plethora of single crystal morphologies have been observed, and the detailed formation mechanism will be discussed.

Generating Chemically And Morphologically Diverse Surfaces Through Post Polymerization Modification Of Polymer Brushes written by Karson Shayne Brooks and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with categories.

Post-polymerization modification of reactive polymer brushes serves as a way to fabricate and design polymeric thin films that can be precisely tuned for desired applications. When combined with click chemistry (reactions that are fast, high yielding, and react with high fidelity), post-polymerization modification is further simplified, allowing for the design of even more complex surfaces. Herein, a new click reaction, sulfur fluoride exchange (SuFEx) chemistry, is studied for post-polymerization of reactive polymer brushes, and aminolysis of well-studied poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate) (Poly(PFPA)) brushes are used for the generation of complex morphologies and self-sorting multi-functional surfaces. First, the conditions, reactivities, and limitations of SuFEx chemistry in polymer brush systems are extensively studied with variations of the brush systems, catalysts, and reactants. Studies on the kinetics of the reaction as well as product identification provide guidance for using this reaction in polymer brush systems as well as give further evidence for elucidation of the reaction mechanism. Complex morphological features and surfaces are also generated and studied in poly(PFPA) brush films. Surface creasing, a failure mechanism of soft materials when exposed to substantial stress, is induced through the confined reaction of Jeffamine M-2070, an amine bearing copolymer of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(propylene oxide), with the brush surface. The variables governing and controlling crease formation in poly(PFPA) polymer brushes as well as the underlying mechanism are investigated in order to better control, understand, and ultimately expand this phenomenon to other polymer brush systems. Poly(PFPA) brushes are additionally used to fabricate a self-sorting surface with three orthogonal click reactions. Using poly(PFPA) as a scaffold, an amine-bearing strained alkyne and an amine-bearing sulfonyl fluoride were patterned onto the surface and reacted with complementary functionalities for aminolysis, strain-promoted alkyne azide cycloaddition, and SuFEx chemistry in one reaction vessel. This results in a surface that can self-sort three orthogonal reactions to pattern chemical functionalities as well as differing morphologies. Finally, poly(PFPA) polymer networks are fabricated using a photoactive cross-linker in order to create dense reactive polymer films that can be fabricated simply, scaled for industrial use, and expanded to other surfaces with no surface pretreatment required.

The design and synthesis of molecularly or supramolecularly defined interfacial architectures have seen in recent years a remarkable growth of interest and scientific research activities for various reasons. On the one hand, it is generally believed that the construction of an interactive interface between the living world of cells, tissue, or whole organisms and the (inorganic or organic) materials world of technical devices such as implants or medical parts requires proper construction and structural (and functional) control of this organism–machine interface. It is still the very beginning of generating a better understanding of what is needed to make an organism tolerate implants, to guarantee bidirectional communication between microelectronic devices and living tissue, or to simply construct interactive biocompatibility of surfaces in general. This exhaustive book lucidly describes the design, synthesis, assembly and characterization, and bio-(medical) applications of interfacial layers on solid substrates with molecularly or supramolecularly controlled architectures. Experts in the field share their contributions that have been developed in recent years.

The progress in polymer science is revealed in the chapters of Polymer Science: A Comprehensive Reference, Ten Volume Set. In Volume 1, this is reflected in the improved understanding of the properties of polymers in solution, in bulk and in confined situations such as in thin films. Volume 2 addresses new characterization techniques, such as high resolution optical microscopy, scanning probe microscopy and other procedures for surface and interface characterization. Volume 3 presents the great progress achieved in precise synthetic polymerization techniques for vinyl monomers to control macromolecular architecture: the development of metallocene and post-metallocene catalysis for olefin polymerization, new ionic polymerization procedures, and atom transfer radical polymerization, nitroxide mediated polymerization, and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer systems as the most often used controlled/living radical polymerization methods. Volume 4 is devoted to kinetics, mechanisms and applications of ring opening polymerization of heterocyclic monomers and cycloolefins (ROMP), as well as to various less common polymerization techniques. Polycondensation and non-chain polymerizations, including dendrimer synthesis and various "click" procedures, are covered in Volume 5. Volume 6 focuses on several aspects of controlled macromolecular architectures and soft nano-objects including hybrids and bioconjugates. Many of the achievements would have not been possible without new characterization techniques like AFM that allowed direct imaging of single molecules and nano-objects with a precision available only recently. An entirely new aspect in polymer science is based on the combination of bottom-up methods such as polymer synthesis and molecularly programmed self-assembly with top-down structuring such as lithography and surface templating, as presented in Volume 7. It encompasses polymer and nanoparticle assembly in bulk and under confined conditions or influenced by an external field, including thin films, inorganic-organic hybrids, or nanofibers. Volume 8 expands these concepts focusing on applications in advanced technologies, e.g. in electronic industry and centers on combination with top down approach and functional properties like conductivity. Another type of functionality that is of rapidly increasing importance in polymer science is introduced in volume 9. It deals with various aspects of polymers in biology and medicine, including the response of living cells and tissue to the contact with biofunctional particles and surfaces. The last volume is devoted to the scope and potential provided by environmentally benign and green polymers, as well as energy-related polymers. They discuss new technologies needed for a sustainable economy in our world of limited resources. Provides broad and in-depth coverage of all aspects of polymer science from synthesis/polymerization, properties, and characterization methods and techniques to nanostructures, sustainability and energy, and biomedical uses of polymers Provides a definitive source for those entering or researching in this area by integrating the multidisciplinary aspects of the science into one unique, up-to-date reference work Electronic version has complete cross-referencing and multi-media components Volume editors are world experts in their field (including a Nobel Prize winner)
