The growing awareness within the polymer science community that commercially viable materials can be developed by melt mixing already existing ones led to an interest to explore ways that improve miscibility between known polymers. This strategy allows for savings in research and development of new materials with equivalent properties, and for faster development time. This dissertation seeks to assist this endeavor by presenting a simple chemical modification method to enhance compatibility in classic polydiene-polyolefin systems.The foremost commercial application of polyisoprene, a polydiene that is the synthetic equivalent of natural rubber, is tire manufacture. If mixed well, saturated polybutadiene (hPB), a well-known polyolefin, can impart thermo-oxidative stability and improved gas-barrier properties to polyisoprene. However, polyisoprene and hPB are incompatible due to structural differences. Selectively saturated block copolymers prepared via living anionic polymerization showed significant improvement in polyisoprene/hPB compatibility (characterized by >50% decrease in interaction energy density, X) on randomly incorporating small amounts of styrene into the hPB chain. Moreover, the variation of block copolymer interaction energy with styrene content could be accurately predicted by standard mixing models like the regular mixing model and the copolymer equation model, at all levels of styrene incorporation. Analogous polymer blends displayed similar thermodynamic behavior, after correcting for fluctuation and end-group effects that become significant at low molecular weights. This similarity suggested that X is a segment-level parameter, independent of mixture architecture, as predicted by fundamental mixing theories.The polar modifier used for styrene-butadiene random copolymerization was evaluated for efficacy in randomizing the butadiene sequence with other styrenic monomers like 4-methylstyrene, 4-t-butylstyrene, and 4-vinylbiphenyl, to potentially expand the roster of species that could aid in PI/hPB compatibility enhancement. This modifier is effective in randomizing the 4-methylstyrene/butadiene sequence but proved to be ineffective for the others. This result was utilized to investigate polyisoprene-containing block copolymer thermodynamics in systems where 4-methylstyrene was incorporated into the hPB chain, instead of styrene. These block copolymers exhibited >25% decrease in X on incorporating ~25 wt% 4-methylstyrene, but the interaction energy variation with composition could not be accurately predicted by the regular mixing model or the copolymer equation model.

FROM THE AUTHORS' PREFACE: During the 1980's a steadily increasing number of compatible systems [polymer blends] have been reported. We believe that miscible mixtures will prove to be fairly common and the purpose of this book is to explore the circumstances in which single phase materials can be obtained. We will also describe a model for the phase behavior of these mixtures which we believe to have a predictive value, or be used as a practical guide to polymer miscibility. Our approach is based on the use of association models which have until recently been largely ignored in treating hydrogen bonding in polymer mixtures. They have most frequently been applied to mixtures of alcohols with simple hydrocarbons, where the equilibrium constants used to describe association have most frequently been determined by a fit to thermodynamic data (e.g., vapor pressures, heat of mixing). In our work we have sought to, first, adapt this approach to a description of the phase behavior of polymer mixtures; second, develop spectroscopic methods that provide an independent measurement of the equilibrium constants. Our purpose in this book is to explore and describe this approach and illustrate its broad utility. We address two overlapping yet different audiences. One would be primarily interested in the broad nature of this approach and the practical applications of a simple model. Polyolefin blends represent a vital material field due to their economic and commercial importance. Potential new properties such as lighter weight, lower cost and higher strength, motivate research to investigate blends of saturated hydrocarbon polymers. However, many questions remain concerning how polymer chain structure and packing influence local thermodynamics, or more specifically, the interplay between enthalpy and entropy, which ultimately control bulk phase behavior. Solid-state NMR has proven to be an essential tool in these studies due to its ability to selectively observe molecular level conformations and dynamics without isotopic labeling. Combinations of basic and advanced variable temperature studies such as 1D and 2D 13C cross-polarization exchange experiments, static 2H lineshape analysis, 1H relaxation/spin-diffusion measurements, and 129Xe experiments were applied in this work. Several systems were studied, including 50/50 weight percent blends of polyisobutylene with polyethylene-co-1-butene, polyisobutylene with head-to-head polypropylene, and atactic polypropylene with the same polyethylene-co-1-butene samples. The results were used to determine a relationship between miscibility, length scales of mixing, and timescales/length scales of the glass transition.

In the first chapter, miscibility of homogeneous propylene/ethylene (P/E) copolymers of relatively narrow molecular weight distribution was studied as a function of constituent comonomer content. Polymers with up to 31 mol% ethylene were blended in pairs in order to vary the comonomer content difference. Copolymers of molecular weight about 200 kg/mol were miscible if the difference in ethylene content was less than about 18 mol%, and immiscible if the ethylene content difference was greater than about 20 mol%. Blends with constituent composition difference in the range of 18 20 mol% exhibited partial miscibility in the melt. In the second chapter, the effect of chain microstructure on the miscibility and phase behavior of ethylene-octene (EO) copolymer blends was studied. Binary blends of two statistical copolymers (EO/EO blends) that differed in comonomer content were compared with blends of an EO with an olefinic blocky ethylene-octene copolymer, OBC (EO/OBC blends). Two EOs of molecular weight about 100 kg/mol were miscible if the difference in octene content was less than about 10 mol% and immiscible if the octene content difference was greater than about 13 mol%. The blocky nature of the OBCs reduced the miscibility and broadened the partial miscibility window of EO/OBC blends compared to EO/EO blends. The EO/OBC blends were miscible if the octene content difference was less than 7 mol% and immiscible above 13 mol% octene content difference. In the third chapter, the adhesion of some ethylene-octene copolymers to polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) was studied in order to evaluate their suitability as compatibilizers for PP/HDPE blends. A one-dimensional model of the compatibilized blend was fabricated by layer-multiplying coextrusion. The microlayered tapes consisted of many alternating layers of PP and HDPE with a thin tie-layer inserted at each interface. The thickness of the tie-layer varied from 0.1 to 14 microns, which included thicknesses comparable to those of the interfacial layer in a compatibilized blend. A blocky copolymer (OBC) consistently exhibited better adhesion to PP than statistical copolymers (EO). Inspection of the crack-tip damage zone revealed a change from a continuous plastic damage zone in tie-layers 2 microns or thicker to a highly fibrillated damage zone in thinner tie-layers.
