Se fino a qualche tempo fa Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886) era ricordato pressoché esclusivamente per l'opera "Gioconda", il recente interesse per questo musicista ha messo in luce aspetti inediti della sua carriera fra i quali la sua attività di direttore di banda.La tavola rotonda cremonese dà esito delle ricerche su questa attività, favorite sia dal recente rinvenimento del corpus bandistico ponchielliano, sia dal rinato interesse da parte della musicologia verso il vasto e radicato fenomeno musicale ottocentesco della banda tout court.Per la prima volta musicisti, musicologi, organologi analizzano il repertorio bandistico ponchielliano, formato da tutti i generi caratteristici dell'epoca: le marce civiche; le marce funebri; i ballabili; le elegie e i concerti di altissimo livello virtuosistico; le fantasie e le trascrizioni di brani d'opera, mezzi di divulgazione capillare del melodramma italiano.L'indagine ha in definitiva posto in luce non soltanto brillanti pagine di musica e un repertorio del tutto significativo di quel "dilettevole trattenimento" che si svolgeva nelle città italiane, ma anche un'inedita pagina di storia dell'Italia dell'Ottocento rivissuta attraverso i suoni della banda e la maestrìa di un artista. Il volume è completato da un aggiornamento del catalogo delle opere di Ponchielli.

Una riflessione del tutto inedita sull’entità e la qualità della consapevolezza musicale degli italiani lungo tutto il Novecento, che va oltre le limitazioni di “genere” e abbraccia una definizione il più ampia possibile di “cultura”: si prende in considerazione infatti non solo il “sapere” musicale strettamente inteso, dunque, ma - allargandosi su una declinazione di campo culturale più aggiornata dal punto di vista teoretico e storiografico – ogni tipo di esperienza che può configurarsi come pratica culturale. Le grandi direttrici di ricerca individuate sono tre: 1) la formazione musicale all’interno dei percorsi educativi istituzionali e i percorsi formativi non istituzionali; 2) le pratiche musicali non professionali e partecipative (dilettantismo, associazionismo, usi sociali della musica); 3) la fruizione collettiva e individuale di musica, con particolare accento sul ruolo svolto dai mezzi di comunicazione di massa lungo il corso del Novecento. Dai Conservatori alle bande di paese ai cori amatoriali, dalla programmazione dei teatri e delle istituzioni musicali alle trasmissioni radiofoniche e televisive e all'editoria musicale, fino alla musica in rete, un itinerario completo e aggiornato nella vasta gamma di interessi e manifestazioni che percorrono il nostro Paese.
