Thirteen-year-old Satoshi Matsumoto spent the last three years living in Atlanta where he was the star of his middle-school baseball team—a slugger with pro potential, according to his coach. Now that his father's work in the US has come to an end, he's moved back to his hometown in rural Japan. Living abroad has changed him, and now his old friends in Japan are suspicious of his new foreign ways. Even worse, his childhood foe Shintaro, whose dad has ties to gangsters, is in his homeroom. After he joins his new school's baseball team, Satoshi has a chance to be a hero until he makes a major-league error. "A heart-warming story about a baseball player who learns that teamwork is much more important than being the star of the team. I loved the family dynamics and depiction of life, and especially baseball, in Japan."—Shauna Holyoak, author of Kazu Jones and the Denver Dognappers (Hyperion, 2019) "A story set in Japan rich in details only Kamata, an insider, could share. With ease and respect, she weaves the pressures, agonies, and loyalties of Satoshi's life at home, at school and on a junior high baseball team with the practices and traditions of the game played in Japan. I am a big fan of this middle-grade homerun!"—Annie Donwerth Chikamatsu, award-winning author of Somewhere Among (Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books, 2017) "Pop Flies really pops! A lively, fun, easy read that draws you in and keeps you guessing."—Dori Jones Yang, award-winning author of The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball (SparkPress, 2017)

The systematic analysis of baseball statistics, often called "sabermetrics," has evolved in recent years to resemble something of a science, attracting fans from diverse professional and educational backgrounds, all fascinated by the analysis itself and its insights into the game. But one problem has defied solution: estimating runs saved by fielders throughout history. Traditional statistics include errors and plays made, but not hits that could or should have been prevented. The latter can now be estimated using records of the location of every batted ball, but the underlying data exists only for recent seasons and has generally been withheld from the public. Now, in Wizardry, comes the long-awaited breakthrough. Drawing solely on freely available baseball statistics, Michael A. Humphreys shows how to apply classic statistical methods to estimate runs saved by fielders going back to 1893. Humphreys tests his results against other fielding measures, including published ratings based on proprietary batted ball location data, and explains their respective strengths and limitations. He also introduces a method for adjusting historical player ratings for increased competition due to population growth, integration, and international recruitment. Position by position, Humphreys identifies and profiles the greatest fielders of all time with anecdote-rich essays. Sabermetrics changed baseball and introduced a generation to the art of statistical inference. Wizardry makes the case for the most significant changes in historical player valuation in decades, while opening up new approaches for further exploration.

I'M BORED! offers hundreds of suggestions and links to fun and educational activities, questions to ask, jobs to perform, and services to volunteer, all-of-which develop the intellect, confidence, and feelings of fulfillment. These activities may also deter the hand-to-mouth eating habit that so often accompanies boredom. WARNING! Reading this book and following these instructions may cause significant changes to your health and life. Adhering to the nutritional guidelines and participating in the suggested activities on a regular basis may cause long-term weight loss and feelings of well-being. Common side-effects may include, but are not limited to, increased amounts of energy, confidence, and clarity of mind; frequent feelings of joy, happiness, and fulfillment; frequent feelings of purpose, meaning, and significance; increased episodes of love, laughter and inspiration, followed by a sudden awareness that people want to be near you. Additional effects may also include loss of desire for inferior food and fewer bouts of depression, anxiety, and illness. If at any time these effects wane or do not fully occur, repeat the behaviors until the desired results become evident. Carol McCormick is a certified personal trainer and a certified health coach through the American Council on Exercise, one of the top fitness organizations in the world. I'M HUNGRY! I'M BORED! was born out of her great concern for children and adults who struggle with weight-related personal and social issues. Overweight children are falling prey to a host of “adult” diseases, and many are taunted, teased, and bullied because of their appearance. Adults are not immune to this discrimination, as they are also “sized-up” when searching for a date or seeking a career. These painful emotions often cause both children and adults, not only to feel sad or upset, but also inferior and insecure. As these physical, emotional, and social problems intensify, feelings of unhappiness may also increase. Habits instilled in your children now often follow them into their future. In helping them, you will be helping yourself, because what works for them will work for you too, if you need a nudge in this direction. I’M HUNGRY! I’M BORED! provides the blueprints needed to lay a strong foundation and create new behaviors that lead to better health, a leaner physique, and a happier life! TABLE OF CONTENTS I’M HUNGRY! Completely updated and expanded through the 2019 baseball season! In a game that has been our national pastime since the 1850s, there have been countless changes, additions and adaptations to the rules of baseball. But while the sport has altered considerably in recent years, its essence is still deeply rooted in its early history. Completely revised and updated through the 2019 baseball season, David Nemec has brought back into print his renowned book The Official Rules of Baseball Illustrated. Along with providing a thorough investigation into the rules of the game and how they came to be, Nemec explains the reasoning behind many of the modifications, both large and small, and in so doing furnishes numerous examples of the specific instances that led to a particular rule being created afresh, rewritten or excised from the rule book entirely. Whether we’re talking about the uproarious “Pine Tar Game,” harrowing home plate collisions, or the constant fine tuning through the years to maintain an equilibrium between hitting and pitching, fans of all ages are given a comprehensive handbook of the pivotal incidents that shaped the game as we know it today. But The Official Rules of Baseball Illustrated is much more than a textbook on the rules. It is rich with illustrative anecdotes throughout the game’s long history that feature many of baseball’s most famous players, umpires and teams as well as some of its most unsung. With photographs that help bring to life some of the movers and shakers in the ways the game has evolved over time, all fans of the sport will welcome adding this book to their libraries. As The Glory of Their Times author Lawrence S. Ritter said, “This is one of the most entertaining baseball books I have read in a very long time. Any baseball fan, young or old, will find it fun...”

From the author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Congo comes a psychological thriller about a group of scientists who investigate a spaceship discovered on the ocean floor. In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface, a huge vessel is unearthed. Rushed to the scene is a team of American scientists who descend together into the depths to investigate the astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship, but apparently it is undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old, containing a terrifying and destructive force that must be controlled at all costs.

Nobody S Perfect written by Armando Galarraga and has been published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-02 with Sports & Recreation categories.

The Detroit Tigers, an umpire, a pitcher, and a mistake—one of the “classic, human, baseball stories” (Ken Burns, creator of the PBS mini-series Baseball). The perfect game is one of the rarest accomplishments in sports. In nearly four hundred thousand contests in over 130 years, it has happened only twenty times. On June 2, 2010, Armando Galarraga threw baseball’s twenty-first. Except that’s not how it entered the record books. That’s because Jim Joyce, voted the best umpire in the game in 2010 and 2011, missed the call on the final out. But rather than throwing a tantrum, Galarraga simply turned and smiled, went back to the mound, and finished the game. “Nobody’s perfect,” he said later in the locker room. “You might think everything that could have been said, replayed, and revealed about that night has already been uttered, logged, and exposed. You would, however, be as wrong as the unfortunate Mr. Joyce” (The Detroit News). In Nobody’s Perfect, Galarraga and Joyce come together to tell the personal story of a remarkable game that will live forever in baseball lore, and to trace their fascinating lives in sports. The result is “a masterpiece”, an absorbing insider’s look at two careers in baseball, a tremendous achievement, and an enduring moment of pure grace and sportsmanship (The Huffington Post).
