Now is an opportune moment to consider the shifts in youth and popular culture that are signalled by texts that are being read and viewed by young people. In a world seemingly compromised by climate change, political and religious upheavals and economic irresponsibility, and at a time of fundamental social change, young people are devouring fictional texts that focus on the edges of identity, the points of transition and rupture, and the assumption of new and hybrid identities. This book draws on a range of international texts to address these issues, and to examine the ways in which key popular genres in the contemporary market for young people are being re-defined and re-positioned in the light of urgent questions about the environment, identity, one’s place in the world, and the fragile nature of the world itself. The key questions are: • What are the shifts and changes in youth culture that are identified by the market and by what young people read and view? • How do these texts negotiate the addressing of significant questions relating to the world today? • Why are these texts so popular with young people? • What are the most popular genres in contemporary best-sellers and films? • Do these texts have a global appeal, and, if so, why? These over-arching themes and ideas are presented as a collection of inter-related essays exploring a rich variety of forms and styles from graphic novels to urban realism, from fantasy to dystopian writing, from epic narratives to television musicals. The subjects and themes discussed here reveal the quite remarkable diversity of issues that arise in youth fiction and the variety of fictional forms in which they are explored. Once seen as not as important as adult fiction, this book clearly demonstrates that youth fiction (and the popular appeal of this fiction) is complex, durable and far-reaching in its scope.

This book discusses the importance of music-hall to the development of English drama, and many music-hall acts are analysed, a number with reference to the responses of the audience before whom they were recorded. The different but related dramatic techniques of epic drama and the music-hall tradition are considered with reference to the work of T.S. Eliot, Thornton Wilder, Beckett, Osborne, Arden, Pinter, Albee, Griffiths and Nichols. Finally, the phenomenon of abusing the audience is discussed, particular reference being made to Handke's "Offending the Audience" and the Royal Shakespeare Company's "US".

U2’s ongoing popular appeal is constructed in the spaces between band and fan, commercialism and community, spirituality and nihilism; finding meaning in a surface-oriented popular culture and contradiction in the depths of political and faith-based institutions. This thesis focuses directly on blockbuster and special exhibitions that center on the concept of entertainment as both a facet of contemporary art and also as a way the museum chooses to attract and engage their visitors. While these exhibitions can at times seem controversial, overly commercial, and populist, they are often the result of the pressures museums face against the current economic climate and competition from other leisure activities. Due to the overwhelming response museums often see in both attendance and general visitor interest, these exhibitions have the power to reach large groups of people and make their museums more influential and appealing to perspective guests. Work for this thesis was completed through extensive research on four specific case studies: the Tim Burton Retrospective at MoMA, the collaboration between Bravo and the Brooklyn Museum for 'Work of Art: The Next Great Artist,' the Ralph Lauren car exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the inclusion of the Louis Vuitton boutique inside of LA MOCA for the Murakami Retrospective. While some critics have debated whether or not these exhibitions have questioned the integrity of museums, others believe that these mass appeal special exhibitions help to showcase the transformation of institutions trying to cater to the general public as opposed to those interested in more exclusive interests and niche categories. Overall, these popular appeal exhibitions serve as strong examples of museums responding and reacting to cultural changes and the pressures they face to maintain relevancy.
