School Tax: We recommend that legislation be enacted authorizing and directing the counties to assume the debts and obligations of all school districts located within the counties. Soon after the General Assembly convenes next January, the League will hold an all-day Legislative Con ference to adopt a final legislative program. This conference will be cli maxed by a banquet given in honor of the General Assembly, following the custom inaugurated in 1935. The eye test is given on an instrument rented from the Bausch and Lomb Company and known as the ortho-rater. From 1947 to 1951, before the introduction of the ortho-rater, Snellen charts, familiar equipment in the offices of optometrists, were used by license examiners. Because of variations in light conditions and available space in examining stations, these charts proved unsatisfactory and unreliable. The ortho-rater contains its own light source and the distance of the eye from the test pattern is always the same. Excerpt from Popular Government, Vol. 4: September, 1937 Real Wages - Economists tell us that real wages are the dollar wages paid expressed in terms of pur chasing power. A recent survey made in Fort Wayne, Indiana, shows the dollar wages, the cost of living index (using 1923-25 as a base), and the real wages for the period 1926-37 for Policemen and Firemen. This survey shows that the highest real wages were in 1932, when $160 in dollar wages equaled in purchasing power when compared with 1923-25. In 1937 a dollar wage of $150 amounted to in real wages, or some $10 less than that of 1933. This reduction in real wages from 1933 to 1937 amounts to more than the dollar wage cuts suffered during the depression, yet we ima gine it would be hard to convince a patrolman that his present $150 is less than the $140 he got in 1933.
