The Witless Bay Islands Ecological Reserve in south-east Newfoundland supports large & diverse populations of breeding seabirds. This report presents findings of surveys conducted during the summers of 1999 to 2003 to determine the breeding populations of five seabird species on Gull & Great islands in the Reserve: common murres, razorbills, Atlantic puffins, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern fulmars. Comparisons are made where possible with results of earlier surveys. Incidental observations of some other bird species are also reported.

A comprehensive monograph on the Atlantic Puffin. With its colourful beak and fast, whirring flight, this is the most recognisable and popular of all North Atlantic seabirds. Puffins spend most of the year at sea, but for a few months of the year the come to shore, nesting in burrows on steep cliffs or on inaccessible islands. Awe-inspiring numbers of these birds can sometimes be seen bobbing on the sea or flying in vast wheels over the colony, bringing fish in their beaks back to the chicks. However, the species has declined sharply over the last decade; this is due to a collapse in fish stocks caused by overfishing and global warming, combined with an exponential increase in Pipefish (which can kill the chicks). The Puffin is a revised and expanded second edition of Poyser's 1984 title on these endearing birds, widely considered to be a Poyser classic. It includes sections on their affinities, nesting and incubation, movements, foraging ecology, survivorship, predation, and research methodology; particular attention is paid to conservation, with the species considered an important 'indicator' of the health of our coasts.

"This volume of Studies in Avian Biology resulted from a Symposium on Avian Disease at the North American Ornithological Conference held in Veracruz, Mexico, in October 2006. The diverse set of topics addressed in the contributed chapters include the evolutionary and ecological aspects of the host-vector systems of avian infectious disease, effects of genetic variation, introduction success and vector ecology, evolution of resistance and virulence of pathogens, and effects of changing geographic distributions. In additional to empirical studies under field conditions, the authors have developed predictive models to assess the movement and potential impact of these diseases. Other chapters delve into the potential impacts of pathogens on ornithological research and the key role of ornithological science in biosurveillance and documenting impacts of disease on bird populations"-- Provided by publisher.

The North Atlantic coast of North America—commonly known as the Atlantic Coast—extends from Newfoundland and Labrador through the Maritime Provinces and the Northeastern United States south to Cape Hatteras. This North Atlantic region belongs to the sea. The maritime influence on climate, flora, and fauna is dominant — even far inland. Both on land and at sea, this region is where north meets south, where the great northern boreal forests intermingle with the southern coniferous-hardwood forests, and where the icy Labrador Current and the tropical Gulf Stream vie for supremacy and eventually mix. The Atlantic Coast draws upon the best and most up-to-date science on the ecology of the region as well as the author’s lifetime experience as a resident, biologist, and naturalist. The book explores the geological origins of the region, the two major forest realms, and the main freshwater and marine ecosystems, and describes the flora and fauna that characterize each habitat. It ends with a look at what has been lost and how the remaining natural heritage of the region might be conserved for the future.

As part of ongoing efforts to monitor seabird breeding colonies on the Newfoundland coast, the breeding seabirds of Small Island, in the Wadham Island group east of Fogo Island, were inventoried in summer 2001. This report describes & presents results of that inventory with regard to numbers of breeding Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica), Leach's storm petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa), and razorbill (Alca torda). Results from earlier surveys, particularly 1984, are also compiled & compared with these recent estimates. Finally, factors driving changes in the size of the breeding populations are discussed.
