Twelve population scientists address the questions: What are the major changes that occurred in the 1980s? What created these changes? What major consequences result from these changes for the present and for the future? Included are chapters that give theoretical explanations of social change, discuss the social and ecological effects of high population density, and show the change in population composition, fertility and mortality rates, and migration patterns. In addition to these traditional demographic concerns, the work also provides insights into community redevelopment, poverty, changing family patterns, and ethnic identification.

"This paper uses 1990 census results for counties and cities to summarize the broad population distribution trends of the 1980's and compare them with the two preceding decades. It also notes how some of the trends accelerated, slackened, or reversed during the decade, based on the Bureau of the Census annual postcensal population estimates for counties for 1981 to 1988. The 1990 population counts used for this paper are subject to possible correction for undercount or overcount."--P. [1].

Abstract: Developing countries start the decade facing two major challenges: to continue the social and economic progress of the past 30 years in an international climate that looks less helpful; and to tackle the plight of the 800 million people living in absolute poverty, who have benefitted too little from past progress. This report examines some of the difficulties and prospects in both areas. One of its central themes is the importance of people in development. The first part of the report addresses the expected sluggish world economic growth as oil-importing countries reduce their current account deficits and adapt to higher energy costs. Domestic policies of developing countries will be crucial, and the fate of poor people in these countries will be decided largely by domestic opportunities and policies. The second part of the report describes the role of human development programs (in education, health, nutrition, and fertility reduction) and their related effects on productivity and population growth.
