S'agit-il d'un nouveau visage de l'extrême droite ou d'une simple instrumentalisation du désarroi de populations précarisées ? Questions, parmi d'autres, que doit se poser notre société face à ces populismes aux recettes outrageusement simplificatrices et toujours démagogiques. Le phénomène n'est certes pas neuf. De Boulanger à Le Pen, en passant notamment par Degrelle, Perôn et Poujade, et jusqu'aux télépopulistes actuels, l'Histoire n'a jamais été avare de ce genre d'aventuriers ou apprentis-chefs. Raison pour laquelle l'auteur s'emploie d'abord à mettre ces poussées de fièvre en perspective. Il esquisse ensuite, pour aujourd'hui, un état des lieux de la question, non sans montrer qu'une certaine gauche de la gauche entend depuis peu se réapproprier le concept polysémique de " populisme " pour lui instiller la dimension progressiste de ses origines. Conscient de ce que le vernis d'humanité est plus mince qu'il n'y paraît en général, il appelle enfin tous les démocrates à un nécessaire devoir de vigilance citoyenne.

Debt is often thought of as a mere economic variable governed by a simplistic mechanical logic, ignoring its other facets. Whose debt, and debt of what exactly? This volume analyzes debt as a political and social construct, with a multiplicity of purposes and agents. All of these are vectors of meanings that are highly diverse, and of subtle distinctions; they show that debt is a transverse phenomenon, cutting across spaces that are not merely economic but also domestic, social and political. Each contributor takes a fresh view of the subject, dealing with debt at a different time, in a different society, on a different scale of observation. By adopting a determinedly interdisciplinary approach, the authors reveal in the phenomenon of debt a diversity of social and gendered determinants that amount in some cases to domination, allegiance or slavery, and in others to solidarity and emancipation. The fundamental question uniting the contributions to this volume is: what exactly is populism? This is certainly not a new question, as a large amount of literature has focused on this topic for more than half a century. As little conceptual consensus has been reached so far, this book aims to reduce the level of abstraction. To this end, it approaches the populist phenomenon from a broader theoretical and empirical perspective, making reference to its developments on several continents. The book is divided into two parts: the first is theoretical and discusses various perspectives on populism, while the second is empirical and emphasises the diversity of the forms populism has embraced throughout the world. Without aiming to solve old dilemmas, to cover all the existing forms of populism, or to outline unequivocal conclusions, the contributions to this book fulfil a twofold task. The Political Economy of Lula’s Brazil describes the social, political and economic transformations that led to increased interest in the tropical giant at the start of the 21st century.
