This book provides the first systematic and comparative analysis of the intersections of populism and science in Europe, from the perspective of political sociology. Oliver Geden rückt mit der Freiheitlichen Partei Österreichs und der Schweizerischen Volkspartei zwei Akteure ins Blickfeld, die den Übergang von Oppositions- zu Regierungsparteien mit höchst unterschiedlichem Erfolg bewältigt haben. Anhand von Medienanalysen sowie von eigens durchgeführten Interviews mit FPÖ- und SVP-Politikern zeichnet der Autor nach, in welcher Weise die inhaltliche Ausgestaltung rechtspopulistischer Politik von strategischen Erwägungen geprägt ist. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Strukturen und Dynamiken der schweizerischen Politik einer rechtspopulistischen Partei günstigere Rahmenbedingungen für dauerhafte Wahlerfolge bieten als dies in Österreich der Fall ist.
