En Por mano propia, Diana Cohen Agrest analiza el lugar que las prácticas suicidas han adquirido en el imaginario social y se pregunta acerca del sentido de la vida humana y sobre el derecho para autodeterminar el fin de la propia existencia. A través de una exhaustiva investigación que recorre el discurso religioso, filosófico, cultural, psicoanalítico y médico, se detiene en el aporte de pensadores como Platón, San Agustín, Tomás de Aquino, Donne, Spinoza, Kant, entre otros, y observa los argumentos que se han desarrollado en las distintas épocas para dar cuenta de una decisión tan inquietante. También revisa algunos actos emblemáticos, como el suicidio de Sócrates, la muerte de Jesús, el martirologio en el cristianismo, las prácticas kamikaze y los suicidios homicidas contemporáneos. Sin abandonar el tono filosófico, la autora se ocupa no sólo de los enfoques reflexivos, sino que incorpora aquellas teorías que permiten el abordaje científico y terapéutico de las conductas asociadas con la muerte voluntaria y da lugar a los modelos que proveen el psicoanálisis, la psiquiatría, la terapia cognitivo conductual y las propuestas que tienden a la prevención. Un apartado especial ocupa el análisis de los casos en los que se recurre a la eutanasia voluntaria y al suicidio asistido, así como también la franja etaria de mayor riesgo en la actualidad: los niños y los adolescentes. Si bien Diana Cohen Agrest considera la carga moral que tiene en la actualidad transgredir el mandato de preservar la vida, incluso a costa del propio sufrimiento, profundiza la polémica sobre los límites de este argumento -en particular, cuando se trata de una vida prolongada tecnológicamente-, en abierta defensa de la dignidad, la autonomía y la libertad humanas.
