"¿Por qué mata el hombre?" es una pregunta que tiene vastas respuestas llegadas desde enfoques científicos hasta artísticos y de la jerga popular. "¿Es una cuestión de esencia o de cultura?", la respuesta es difícil, pero no por ello inabarcable. En estos tiempos de grave violencia en México es, más que necesario, obligado preguntarnos como sociedad qué es lo que motiva a todos esos sicarios, miembros del crimen organizado y personas que se les unen, a matar con tremenda saña a sus semejantes, a sus prójimos. Es en esta época cuando las dudas son más intensas y, por lo mismo, cuando las respuestas se vuelven vitales. Este ensayo nos da luces sobre el tema y nos muestra cómo la muerte es un aspecto presente en la humanidad, mismo que ya antes ha sido abordado y reflejado en la literatura. En el caso específico de la muerte propinada por el otro, hay una suerte de enigma: ¿Por qué el hombre, paradójicamente, en la conservación de su vida mata al otro, es decir, extermina eso que considera un gran valor para sí mismo? Es fundamental conocer los orígenes de la violencia tomando en cuenta los genes y el ambiente. No es suficiente el castigo a los culpables como tampoco marchas, demostraciones, denuncias y crítica que no pasan de ser paliativos o calmantes. Son de gran importancia, por el contrario, el control de las tendencias de la naturaleza humana y la creación de medios sociales propicios para la convivencia pacífica; ejes sobre los cuales se desenvuelve el presente ensayo.

With the rise of nationalism, and with it the nation-state in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, so arose new polemical issues. As the Spanish Empire expanded in the sixteenth century, theologians, jurists, artists and politicians commented on the morality and legitimacy of the imperial enterprise. With the increase in power of successive Spanish sovereigns from the Catholic Monarchs to Philip II (1556–98), followed by the decadence of the state through the reign of Charles II (1665–1700), political participants and observers alike put their thoughts on paper for mass dissemination. The study of epic poetry, poetry, drama, novels, rhetoric, imperial administrative documents and religion, reveals a plethora of means by which these people conveyed thoughts and opinions, often negatively critical, concerning Spain’s monarchs, their imperial policies, the Catholic Church, the role of the nobility in government, and societal limitations. Providing innovative literary interpretations and revealing newly-discovered archival material, experts from US and UK universities have contributed original scholarly studies to this volume which delve deeper than academia has thus far into the operations of imperial Spain and the reactions of the people of the time. Muere a pesar de la presencia balsámica de una francesa fina, culta, delicada y distinguida a la que el doctor Baranda renuncia por no tener el valor de separarse de Alicia.
