"Por que um livro sobre o sofrimento humano em uma Coleção de textos de liturgia? Antes de tudo, porque a liturgia é dimensão intrínseca da pessoa religiosa e, ainda mais, dos seguidores de Jesus. Em sua vida terrena, "Ele andou por toda a parte, fazendo o bem e curando a todos" (At 10,38), testemunhando o amor do Pai e a presença do Reino. Por isso, os cristãos são chamados "pela misericórdia de Deus a se oferecer em sacrifício vivo, santo e agradável a Deus", assim o apóstolo Paulo (Rm 12,1), que conclui: "este é o vosso culto segundo a Palavra". A liturgia tem – deve ter – sua continuação na vida cotidiana. Portanto, a fidelidade ao Senhor exige a solidariedade com os irmãos e as irmãs que sofrem. A Igreja recebeu a missão de estar, com delicada atenção, juntos aos sofredores. Lembremos das palavras do apóstolo Tiago (5,14): "Alguém dentre vós está doente? Mande chamar os presbíteros da Igreja, para que orem sobre ele, ungindo-o com óleo no nome do Senhor". A proximidade aos que sofrem deve ser vivida, de maneira sacramental, com a Unção dos Enfermos, sinal da ternura de Jesus. Essa, porém, não se esgota em uma simples.
