A proposta de reunir em um só livro os protagonistas que trabalham ou trabalharam no processo de desinstitucionalização em Trieste (Itália) amadureceu durante as entrevistas realizadas em meu estágio pós-doutoral, desenvolvido entre os anos de 2010 e 2011. Para entender o cenário de superação do manicômio em Trieste, além de análise de literatura e embates, entrevistei: Franco Rotelli, Giuseppe Dell’Acqua, Roberto Mezzina, Pina Ridente(psiquiatras); Renato Davì (psicólogo); Roberto Colapietro (operador de saúde mental); Raffaele Dovenna (enfermeiro); Carla Prosdocimo (operadora social); Morena Furlan (técnica de reabilitação psiquiátrica); Izabel Marin (assistente social). A escolha dos protagonistas obedeceu aos seguintes critérios: notoriedade na área, envolvimento com o movimento, diversidade profissional e tempo de trabalho no Departamento de Saúde Mental de Trieste. Procurei conhecer as ideias de profissionais com mais e com menos experiência, a fim de obter diversos pontos de vista sobre o processo de desinstitucionalização.
